Some interesting news as Boone Pickens continues to put pressure on Washington to come up with an energy plan. Legislation is now being discussed about a bill to promote use of vehicles that run on cleaner burning natural gas. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) were joined today by energy-independence advocate T. Boone Pickens to tout new legislation that would boost vehicles that run on clean natural gas. The NAT GAS Act, introduced today by Menendez and co-sponsored by Reid and Hatch, would extend and increase tax credits for natural gas vehicles and refueling. Background on legislation <div[More...]

Clean Energy Fuels Corp: Good For The Environment, Good For Your Portfolio?

Clean Energy Fuels is a supplier of natural gas as an alternative fuel across North America and designs, builds, finances, and operates fueling stations and supplies compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas. The company serves approximately 275 fleet customers operating 14,000 natural gas vehicles in public transit, refuse hauling, airports, taxis, seaports, and regional trucking markets. As of December 31, 2007, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. owned and operated 170 natural gas fueling stations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Washington, Georgia, Wyoming, and Canada. Clean Energy Fuel was founded by billionaire T. Boone Pickens, who has made much of his fortune investing in energy markets. Investors should note the company’s shares suffered on Wednesday after California voters struck down a proposition that offered tax rebates to buyers of more fuel-efficient cars.

Oct. 28--The DART board voted Tuesday to solicit bids from firms able to supply nearly 600 new natural gas-powered buses, ending a nearly yearlong debate over whether the transit agency's next-generation fleet should be fueled by natural gas or diesel.

They cited falling natural gas prices as the reason they no longer think diesel buses are the best buy, despite more than $100 million in construction funds that will have to be borrowed upfront to pay for the conversion to a natural-gas fleet.

Those costs, including interest, will be more than offset by fuel savings the agency expects to achieve by choosing natural gas, top staff members have promised the Dallas Area Rapid Transit board.

Oct. 14--In a sharp turnabout from a year ago, DART has endorsed a staff proposal to buy nearly 600 buses powered by compressed natural gas, not diesel.

Late last year, the staff proposed that the board buy diesel-powered buses, arguing that new diesel standards make those engines burn just as cleanly as their natural gas-powered counterparts -- and at much less cost.

That proposal was withdrawn in January, however, after heavy lobbying by Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, who insisted that the bid by a company founded by Dallas billionaire T.
