IMF Says Global Economy Improving

The market was higher in the first hour of trading, but is currently back in negative territory. This comes despite some positive comments out of the IMF, as well as a couple of solid earnings reports to kick off this quarter's earnings season. The IMF upgraded its outlook for the global economy, and said it expects it to expand +2.5% in 2010. Some of the skepticism among investors might stem from comments out of the G8 meeting, where participants said they believe the global economy still faces risks and could need more help. No sooner had I posted my thoughts yesterday about the recent trading range, saying that I thought it would be resolved to the upside, than the market rolled over and nearly tested the downside barrier of the SPX 925-950 range. But after reaching roughly the 928 level, the market staged another late-day rally, and finished down only a few points on the day. Talk about another frustrating day for the bears. The S&P 500 comprises of 500 large cap common stocks actively traded in the United States. The market is slightly higher in early trading, after a relatively flat open. There were a flurry of companies reporting earnings this morning, and while the reports themselves were mostly mixed, the majority of the stocks involved are reacting positively to the news. We know that how stocks react to the news is often more important than the news itself, especially in this case when the earnings report is for last quarter, but the stocks are often looking ahead. Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever. Short Interest Update

If you are an avid short seller, the financial sector is of particular interest. I did some research on short interest levels for various financial-related industries and, as a whole, the sector's short interest level was down 3% (as of Jan 15th). The industries researched are the 1) broker-dealers, large banks, 2) securities processors, 3) regional banks, 4) online brokers, 5) specialty/mortgage finance, 6) life insurance, 7) asset management, 8) p&c insurance, and 9) reinsurance. The largest increase in short interest came from the securities processors, up +42% (partially thanks to STT: +86%). The runners up were the broker-dealers and large banks, up 8%. CME Group: Downgraded At JP Morgan And Sanford Bernstein

Two firms are out cautious/negative on CME Group (NYSE:CME): - Sanford Bernstein downgrades CME to Market Perform saying they will re-evaluate 2009-12 future volume growth rate estimates based on revised outlook for the macroeconomic and financial markets and our reduced reliance on their regression-based future volume forecasts, which have broken down over the past 2 quarters. New price tgt is $200 for CME (and $80 for ICE which is also discussed in the note). The biggest concern they have with regards to the CME is the weakening volumes the firm has seen in its interest rate futures complex. CBOE on track for demutualization

Dec. 2--Years after its local rivals cashed in during a Wall Street boom, the Chicago Board Options Exchange has finally gotten on track for demutualization, setting the stage for a potential initial public offering or acquisition of the homegrown derivatives mart.
In a notice from its Office of the Chairman, the exchange said it has settled a legal case involving Chicago Board of Trade members who held trading privileges stemming from the CBOE's founding in the 1970s.
It was the final skirmish in a legal battle that has delayed the CBOE's long-planned conversion from member governance.
