Early Week Earnings Watch

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.<br[More...]

As I've been repeating for a while now - look for much talk of "needing to lower guidance" and "it's worse than we assumed" and "no visibility, we're pulling guidance". The stronger dollar, once a benefit to U.S. multinationals, shall increasingly be something they complain about.

As I posted late last week, it is time to begin making a list of those beaten down sectors and individual securities that may bring life back to your portfolio(s) in the future. I am not, repeat -NOT - recommending immediate purchase. The markets are still too destabilized for considered actions unless your objective is pure speculation. I am beginning to do screens featuring the worst performing sectors over the past year. Amongst these include Energy (down 40.46%), Financials (down 38.60%), Capital Goods (down 39.80%) and Conglomerates (down 44.50%). One could consider buying the ETFs for these sectors, perhaps through iShares. However, for the brave, looking at individual stocks for your list might be the way to obtain some very handsome returns. Here are a few stocks within the above sectors that feature an interesting profit margin (TTM) vs. their five year profit margin average. All have been beaten to[More...]

Mixed Signals For Fertilizer Companies - Zacks Industry Rank Analysis

Key Points: Urea prices fell by more than $70 in late September A strike is helping to support potash prices Some analysts are raising 2009 earnings forecasts Highlighted stocks include AGU, CF, MOS, POT and TRA Fears that fertilizer companies could be losing pricing power sent their shares tumbling late last week. The primary cause was a sharp drop in urea prices. A report published last Thursday on Farm Futures revealed a $70 decline in Black Sea prices over the previous 2 weeks. (Ammonia prices were weaker as well.) Urea is a key ingredient used in fertilizer. Traders are concerned that the recent drop is an early signal of slipping demand for fertilizer. Any weakness would call into question fourth-quarter and 2009 profit forecasts for Agrium (<a[More...]

Interested in Joy Global Under $42 But...

I am interested in Joy Global (JOYG) here as it breaches below $42, which is now lower than it was before it announced its massive share buyback program. (Sep 11: Joy Global to Buyback 1/5th of Shares this Year; 2/5ths by 2011). However, the problem with a lack of credit is just about all major sales purchases of any major product, the world over, is based on financing. Without financing, we have no global economy. We have no big ticket purchases such as huge mining equipment. Etc. Hence, we remain on a precipice to see if the banks will stop hoarding cash or not. The one problem with this bailout other than being too small in size to address the problem is, there is no guarantee[More...]

Three Infrastructure News Stories

These infrastructure stocks continue to be out of favor on an "institutional money rotation away from global growth stories", but in the big picture I continue to believe the story is very interesting. Below is a series of stories entailing some of the opportunities and challenges we've discussed many times in the blog.First, as we always say - America; the land of not addressing a problem until it's an emergency. And we have an emergency brewing in our infrastructure. The positive is, addressing this emergency can create many good, solid jobs for Americans. (these will be tough to offshore) The negative is we're plain broke and we'll have to call the Chinese or Middle Easterners to help us pay for the coming tsunami of upgrades. Or back to the printing press (strong dollar everyone - strong dollar) Even worse - many of these solutions will relay not on states (who actually seem to get some things done in America) but on that pathetic body[More...]

We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we've been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We've also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, watch for a retest to go short or get some Put Options. It retested and broke down again last week, hope you caught some of the action. What about the week ahead? The major trend is still to the downside and watch for resistance at 1270 for the S&P 500 index. Also watch the Financials (XLF), Homebuilders (XHB), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Energy (XLE)[More...]

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 20, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Most mergers and acquisitions are buoyed with optimism and hope that the transaction brings added prosperity sometime in the future.

Few appear to have the near instant synergy that an announcement in the heavy equipment industry today seems to indicate.

Today's announcement by AmeraMex International, Inc.
