Oct. 17--West Virginia has been known as the Coal State almost since its inception, but it is also the Plastics State.
Marshall University's Center for Business and Economic Research, in a study conducted for the Polymer Alliance Zone, found that the industry contributes $2.2 billion to the West Virginia economy and employs about 8,000 people.
Toyota's engine and transmission plant in Buffalo recently began supplying 6-cylinder engines to its Highlander sport utility plant in Indiana.

JayMac Banquet to Honor Distinguished Journalism Alumni

Oct. 8--Journalism and mass communication alumni from the University of Oklahoma will be honored during a banquet tonight at Gaylord Hall.
The JayMac Alumni Association will present the Distinguished Alumni award for 2009 to retired Tulsa World food editor Suzanne Arnote Holloway, advertising executive and CEO of Bernstein-Rein Advertising Bob Bernstein and former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico James R. Jones.
In addition, Newsweek White House Correspondent Holly Bailey will be honored with the 2009 Young Professional award.

Reed's Jobless Bill Will Help Spur the Coming Recovery

Aug. 30--The forecast from Washington that an economic recovery is sprouting doesn't square with what Sarah Robillard sees when she walks her four-month-old daughter in Pawtucket.
Her husband, Christopher, has worked only sporadically in the last 12 months.
The couple is among 72,200 Rhode Islanders, or 12.7 percent of the work force, that the U.S. government counted in July as unemployed.

Pipe-Bending Firm's Exec Not All Manufacturers Are Pessimistic

Aug. 16--Apparently not everybody is singing the blues in the manufacturing sector these days.
A story in the Aug. 7 edition of The News-Herald relayed results of a national study in which 51 percent of executives polled said they were pessimistic about the manufacturing sector's outlook for the remainder of the year.
The News-Herald file photo accompanying that story showed a worker using a remote crane at Kottler Metal Products in Willoughby.
