Transportation Sector - Zacks Analyst Interviews

Stock performance in the transportation sector has been very uneven, reflecting the varying fortunes of particular industries within the sector. The median year-to-date stock price has declined for all industries in the Zacks' transportation universe, as shown below, and compares to a 39.5% stock decrease for the S&P 500. Shipping (55.6)% Airlines (52.1)% Equip & Leasing (37.2)% Air Freight (36.1)% Railroads (23.9)% Trucking (19.1)% Among the hardest hit have been the airlines -- whose performance has been hobbled by recent high oil prices -- and shipping, where spot rates have plummeted from recent historical highs and are near 22-year lows. Finally a Winners list with more than gold on it... it's been a while.As mentioned throughout the week, if you were very nimble this was the week to buy retail, homebuilders, and some financials. The most troubled, bounced the most this week (short covering definitely - real buying? who knows). In terms of fund holdings - it was coal and fertilizer week (along with Mercadolibre); again I lightened up on all these positions as they bounced so strongly. Below is a list of all stocks returning >7% in the past week, and over $2 billion in market cap. Always interesting to see what is in favor, and when the market bounces where the money is flowing - the group below is sorted from highest to lowest returnMain themes that were winners last week were: solar, home builders, fertilizer, retail, coal, oil services, and infrastructure. The fund was represented very well - of the 52 long positions, 17 were represented in this group (I bolded the names) (note: PBR is represented by its very heavy weighting in Brazilian index ETF - EWZ). This is essentially why the fund was able to outperform once again last week, despite having quite substantial cash holdings - having 3 of the top holdings earn 11-17% also did not hurt.Quite a few old positions in the fund also did well, I shaded those in green

In "Cars Follow Houses," I made note of a Reuters report detailing three top investors' dismal outlooks for U.S. car sales in the period ahead. But it isn't only prospective automobile purchasers who are coming up short. Wow, how about that Amazon run in the last 90 minutes today. If you ever want to see what an emotional buying frenzy looks like all you have to do is look at the chart for Amazon today. The expectations going into earnings today were being set very high, and people who have been playing the momentum stocks (Apple, RIMM, etc) just piled on to Amazon expecting the same kind of momentum to continue. Unfortunately for all those who were buying in the last 90 minutes have now all taken a big loss. Amazon is down 10% already in after hours as their earnings were not a blow out as everyone was expecting. The momentum buyers are now sitting in shock and saying to themselves “what happened?”. What has happened is people get caught up in the emotions and they don’t want to be left out, and so they buy into the emotional rush. Look no further than the latest reports coming from the trucking companies.
A lot of red ink still covers the latest quarterly earnings reports of Arkansas' publicly traded trucking companies.
Indeed, the nation's largest trucking company, YRC Worldwide Inc. of Overland Park, Kan., has been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy--it lost $309 million in its second quarter--but may have received salvation from recent pay and benefit concessions by its Teamster drivers.
