How To Profit From The Growing Luxury Market In China

Emerging Asia’s role in the market for high-end luxury goods is mushrooming, reflecting a shift eastward in the global balance of spending power. This shift has crept along for years but has accelerated recently due to the global economic crisis, which has hampered economic growth in many countries. US consumers ended up living beyond their means by borrowing against asset bubbles – housing, stocks, etc. – which have burst and may be weak for years.[More...]

I will try to be intellectually honest with my assessments and recognize my errors. Also i want to look back and see if there are any mental traps that affected my decisions and recognize when i fall for these psychological biases.
Below is all the positions that I have talked about on this blog for over a year or so. All are businesses that I looked to own but did not or I bought and sold.

Spotlight On: Retail-Apparel

Spotlight On: Retail-Apparel The U.S. retail clothing industry includes approximately 11,000 stores nationwide and accumulates a combined $150 billion in revenues each year. The retail clothing industry is very concentrated and the 50 largest companies bring in 65% of the total industry revenue. Most companies in the retail clothing industry are specialized and have found a niche market of customers to appeal to such as women's wear, sporting apparel, maternity, men's clothing, or children's clothing. The size of retail clothing companies range from small independently owned boutique shops to large department stores. Trends in the retail clothing industry have changed dramatically over the past couple of years, especially in response to the recent economic turmoil. A few of the most significant for 2009 and upcoming years[More...]

I even suggested that it was possible that we could exceed 400 “major” bankruptcies in 2009. According to Bankruptcydata.com, there have been 156 “major” filings thus far in 2009. Assuming that bankruptcies are equally distributed throughout the year, this puts us on pace for 312 bankruptcies. That is tracking well shy of my prediction. In fact, bankruptcies were down significantly from Q1 to Q2, as there were 90 bankruptcies in the first quarter but only 66 in the second. That stylized fact begs the question: Is that a “green shoot”[More...]
