Restaurant Margin Relief Underway

Waistlines won't be the only thing expanding at restaurants as commodity prices decline. As expected, recent labor department releases show food costs declining, while restaurant prices continue to rise, suggesting restaurant operators should enjoy margin expansion in 2009. The Labor Department's December Producer Price Index (PPI) indicated a reversal in the rise in finished food costs, declining 1.5% in December from the prior month, following no change in November. The most marked changes were for fresh and dry vegetables, which fell 14.9% sequentially, after rising 3.8% in November. Food costs had been rising steeply, driven in part by rising energy prices and the attendant demand for corn for ethanol, which crowded out land for growing wheat and increased feed costs. For those of you still holding onto AtheroGenics (AGIX), the research-based pharmaceutical company with two clinical-stage drug development programs (according to Zacks senior drug industry analyst Jason Napodano, CFA, who published a report on AGIX last week), the company has just announced today it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Oct. 4--Because of its aggressive annexation policies, Columbus is home to many neighborhoods that in other metro areas would be declining inner-ring suburbs.
Now, the city is struggling to redevelop them, many dating to the 1960s, such as the areas around Eastland Mall and Northland Mall, or newer neighborhoods already in decline, such as Brice-Tussing on the Far East Side.
