In theory it makes sense for companies to reinvest all of their earnings straight back into the business, compounding the growth rate of the enterprise to achieve a higher asset base. If a company can put their earnings to good use, there is no reason for them to pay fat dividends. In reality however the money is wasted away on failed acquisitions, taking on too much risk with new products. Companies that consistently not only pay but increase their dividends over time are more fiscally responsible than the companies that don't pay any dividends. Nov. 7--NEWBURYPORT -- In front of City Hall, trees have been cut and removed, cement has been crumbled and removed, and piles of dirt sit where grass grew only weeks ago.
New plants, a redesign of the veterans monuments and new brick walkways are all part of the plans for the renovations now underway at Brown Square across from City Hall.
But for the next six months or so, William Lloyd Garrison's statue will only have a nearby cherry tree and a couple of monuments to recall what once was.

Bricks help pave way for vets park

Nov. 4--PLANT CITY -- Residents can do their part to help build the Veterans Monument and Park by buying bricks that are being used in the redesign for Courier Field.
Workers for Showalter Construction of Plant City have been busy setting the 12,500 bricks that will serve as a gathering area and walkway for visitors to the monument and park.
Business owner Robert Showalter, a military veteran who has been contracted for the project, said the bricked area will run from the park gazebo to and around the monument honoring all veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Nov. 1--When lawmakers return to Frankfort in January, one number will loom large: $1.19 billion.
The state still has $485 million of federal stimulus money to throw at its budget gap, but bridging the remaining $705 million shortfall could create headaches for just about everybody, including students, state workers, the poor and the sick.
Despite the state's money woes, proposals by two lawmakers from different ends of the political spectrum to overhaul Kentucky's tax system won't likely gain approval in the upcoming legislative session.

Biotech Firm Settles in Jupiter

The new company, Envoy Therapeutics, said it raised $8 million in a private placement led by 5AM Ventures, a life sciences venture capital firm in Menlo Park, Calif.
A neuorscience professor at Rockefeller University in New York, Greengard shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two others for discovering how dopamine, among other things, affects the nervous system.
Envoy's Web site said it will try to develop drugs for schizophrenia, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, drug addiction, epilepsy, anxiety and depression and other disorders.

The appliances are all Energy Star, the house has a geothermal heat pump system for heating, cooling, and hot water, and the lights are all either compact fluorescent or light-emitting diodes; on the roof are solar panels that can generate more than 4 kilowatts of electricity.
The high-tech, eco-friendly amenities were expensive to install, but are saving Ms. Bintz money now.

City Honors 9/11 Victims With Park

Sep. 9--PEABODY -- The city will honor two former Peabody residents who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a ceremony at a new memorial park on Friday, the anniversary of the tragedy.
The service at the park will pay homage to the passengers and public safety personnel who lost their lives on Sept. 11, according to an announcement yesterday by Mayor Michael Bonfanti.
Separate honor guards from the police and fire departments will also participate.

Speedup for Paying State Income Taxes Lies Ahead

Aug. 23--State income taxes are going up again in November.
In a little-noticed piece of the budget plan signed last month, the amount of state income taxes withheld from paychecks will increase 10 percent starting with wages paid after Oct. 31.
Rates went up 0.25 percentage points for each tax bracket for the 2009 and 2010 tax years.
