Restaurant Margin Relief Underway

Waistlines won't be the only thing expanding at restaurants as commodity prices decline. As expected, recent labor department releases show food costs declining, while restaurant prices continue to rise, suggesting restaurant operators should enjoy margin expansion in 2009. The Labor Department's December Producer Price Index (PPI) indicated a reversal in the rise in finished food costs, declining 1.5% in December from the prior month, following no change in November. The most marked changes were for fresh and dry vegetables, which fell 14.9% sequentially, after rising 3.8% in November. Food costs had been rising steeply, driven in part by rising energy prices and the attendant demand for corn for ethanol, which crowded out land for growing wheat and increased feed costs. California Pizza Kitchen, Inc. (CPKI) owns and operates a chain of 243 restaurants, of which 203 are company-owned and 40 operate under franchise or license agreements in 30 states and eight foreign countries. We expect California Pizza Kitchen to continue suffering declining traffic, deleveraging of its rent expense, and shrinking ROEs (returns on equity) well into the 2nd half of 2009. Interactive Brokers Group?s (IBKR) second quarter diluted earnings of $0.44 per share (down 33.3% sequentially, but up 57.1% compared to the prior-year quarter) were six cents short of our estimate. The results were impacted mainly by the 32.6% sequential decline in market making segment?s net revenues (due to subdued market volatility), while the brokerage segment?s net revenues were down 3.0% compared to the prior quarter. The company continued to maintain a highly liquid balance sheet with low leverage, and a strong capital position. Jun. 16--Add Neiman Marcus to the list of prominent retailers cutting hours to save money.
Dallas-based Neiman, which is waiting out the recession by cutting operating hours at half of its 40 stores, joins many malls and chains like Best Buy that are taking similar steps.
In fact, average CEO compensation dropped 26 percent, compared with a 7 percent decline among all CEOs at S&P 500 companies, says an analysis compiled by Equilar Inc. for industry journal Stores.
