Weekend Commentary : Lateral Market...Negative Divergences Abound...

Wouldn't it be nice if the stock market would actually do something! Lateral has been the way for quite some time now. Lots of head fakes both ways but when you study things, the past month or so has seen the market grind up and down due to opposing forces from both the bullish side and the bearish side of the ledger.[More...]

Earnings Preview For Aug 10 - 14, 2009: WMT, JCP, M, KSS, CREE

Retailers will start to release second-quarter results this week, accounting for nearly 10% of the 246 scheduled reports. Dow component Wal-Mart (WMT) will be joined by 15 other members of the S&P 500, including J.C. Penney (JCP), Kohl's (KSS) and Macy's (M). The Fed will hold a 2-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. No change in interest rates will be made, though the statement should acknowledge that the economy is nearing stabilization. The bond markets could be volatile, not only because of the Fed meeting, but also because of quarterly refunding. The Treasury Department will auction 3-year,[More...]

Thursday’s session was a terrific follow-up to yesterday’s very strong session. The indices opened strong, backed and filled and coiled for about half the session, and then got very quiet around lunch hour. When they were unable to break intraday moving averages, trendlines or price support, the indices started to accelerate in the afternoon, particularly when well-known economist Nouriel Roubini, who’d been a bear, said he thinks we’ve seen an economic bottom and turned the corner. That triggered buying. The indices spiked up in late afternoon trading, getting up to nearly 1522 on the NDX and nearly 944 on the SPX. In the last 10 minutes they pulled back sharply, but still ended up quite positive on the day. Net on the day the Dow was up 95.61 to 8711.82, the S&P 500 up 8.06 at 940.74 and the Nasdaq 100 up nearly 18 at 1518.87.
It was a monster day for stocks as the indices gapped up strongly, ran hard in the morning, consolidated mid-day and then ran again in the afternoon, basically stair-stepping higher all day and closing at the highs for the day going away. Net on the day the Dow closed over 8600 at 8616.21, up 256.72. The S&P 500 was up 26.84 at 932.68, and the Nasdaq 100 was up 48.12 at 1500.98.
