The New Investment Manifesto

Mike Price sends: My opinions on investment and the world have changed so dramatically over the past twelve months that I have decided to divide my investment ‘philosophy,’ into two separate sections I think it’s fitting to start this new manifesto at the apex of the former section. My investment career up ‘til this point had been full of disappointments and hypocrisy, I read and wrote about the virtue of doing your own work and investing, not speculating; but all this time I borrowed ideas from others and rarely did the amount of work necessary to justify taking a position. This had all started to change after I stopped working as much and was able to plow all the excess time into investing, to great result (unfortunately the result for my physique was the opposite).[More...]

Generally speaking, I see myself as a value investor. Why then, would am I so often looking towards retailers and generally consumer facing businesses for my best investment ideas (see: A Retail Reversal and Irrational Retail Valuations)? After all, many of the best retail stocks are those that rely on growth to provide shareholder return. And, in the case of liquidation, the bulk of their assets are held in inventory and property* that are rarely liquidated at full value. Then again, Warren Buffett, a value[More...]

Are Corporate Profits Depressed?

Highlights include American International Group, Inc. (AIG), Citigroup, Inc. (C), General Motors Corp. (GM) and Ford Motor Co. (F). As we head into earnings season, it seems clear that we are in for another quarter of rough sledding. As things stand now, the total net income for the S&P 500 is expected to be 27.5% lower than in the first quarter of 2008. This is after a very large increase in the expected profitability of the mega-banks for the quarter -- one that appears tied to the change in mark-to-market rules, which improves accounting profits, but does nothing to help economic profits.<br[More...]

January 13, 2009: Conglomerates, Easy Pickings?

Back in the good old days of Dow 900, the Chevy Nova and Jimmy Carter's brother urinating on an airport runway after a few too many Billy Beers, companies that bought companies for no other reason than to enlarge were blessed as conglomerates and traded in a similar fashion to techs in the mid-90s (without the 24/7 media hype and talking heads goading potential investors, of course). Investors soured on them when the realization set in that many of these acquisitions were bought for no sane reason and then poorly managed into fiscal oblivion. Conglomerates may well be returning to favor. This time, a few are focused using the Buffet model and others are straight-up value plays that may prove to be winners when the economy rebounds - maybe even a bit earlier. Sure, there are companies of this genre that are stinkers, but a few may offer compelling returns over time. Here are some that are presently trading below a PE of 10, based upon[More...]
