Closing Update: Wall Street Recovers From Jobs Report Downer, Ends Higher Friday and Up 3% for Week

Stock averages end narrowly higher Friday after a whipsaw session. All three leading averages record solid 3% weekly gains. A jump for Dow component General Electric (GE) after an analyst upgrade helped offset the damage from a weaker-than-expected October jobs report. Travelers (TRV) and Amazon.com (AMZN) also advanced after an upgrade.[More...]

Q2 results outpaced estimates and guidance; clear signals that company is achieving early turnaround success. 1) Strength in consumer demand (on lowered expectations) is encouraging; brand equity remains high; visibility limited but improving. 2) Wholesale/retail, U.S./int'l, and product mix all contributing to better margin profile; mgmt reiterated its med-term mid-teens op margin target. 3) International markets represent 60%-plus of revenues; Asia strength a key driver. 4) Direct to consumer platform mitigates risk[More...]

Will Chipotle Leave A Bad Taste In Your Mouth?

Traders must be hungry today, because they’re eating up Chipotle Mex Grill (NYSE: CMG) shares today. While the markets have remained mixed or just flat out down the entirety of the day. But not the stock for that purveyor of cilantro-lime rice, carnitas, black beans and all-around flavorful goodness. I know after reading their menu just now, my mouth is watering at the thought of a customized burrito, or maybe one of their delicious quesadillas. Mmmmmm… OK, before I drool on my desk, let’s get to the possible reasons why shareholders are jumping onto this particular food wagon today. For that, let’s first turn to the second-quarter report the chain published last Friday. According to Chipotle, profit picked up by 45% as compared to last year’s second quarter, an impressive gain regardless but especially considering the times they’re operating in. And while analysts expected earnings[More...]

The 'Sucks' Indicator: Google Trends For The Search Term 'Sucks'

In the true traditions of in depth analysis I did a simple survey on Google Trends for the search term "sucks" and an associated company name. I initially wanted to look for attitutes to Google's Adsense program but there wasn't sufficient data to return an answer (censorship or simply a win-win product?), so the search was broadened to improve results. The first comparisons were between Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. Google experienced the most 'suckage' by virtue of its size. The 2008 spike may have corresponded to the changes in its advertising TOS, but it didn't appear to impact the company over the long term and in general, the company has been irking people less since the start of 2006 <a[More...]

Quant Funds And Market Rallies: All Rotten?

Anytime I see a well-written article by another college student, I pay extra attention. Such is the case with Naufal Sanaullah’s piece on why he thinks this recent rally is unsustainable. It’s quite a comprehensive bearish argument, with good points about the technical aspects of trading and a number of shots at the accuracy of last quarter’s bank earnings – and it will also serve as a good starting point for me to assess my own view of where the market is going. Still, I couldn’t help but be struck by the conspiracy-heavy undertones (most of which were backed by links to Zero Hedge – which provides a lot of thought-provoking pieces, none of them ever being positive). I’m not going to argue on points about CDS trades with AIG, because there are[More...]

In early 2008 Dough Kass of Seabreeze Partners and TheStreet.com issued a sell short thesis on Berkshire Hathaway ("BRK") which outlined some of his views as to why BRK was an attractive short candidate. Recently, Kass has come out with some updates on his BRK short with some rather sensationalized titles such as "Is This the End of Warren Buffett?" Titles like that can certainly generate web traffic but doesn't change the fact that this sell short call - in the context of the current market - is based on a very weak thesis.
