Stock averages end narrowly higher Friday after a whipsaw session. All three leading averages record solid 3% weekly gains. A jump for Dow component General Electric (GE) after an analyst upgrade helped offset the damage from a weaker-than-expected October jobs report. Traders must be hungry today, because they’re eating up Chipotle Mex Grill (NYSE: CMG) shares today. While the markets have remained mixed or just flat out down the entirety of the day. But not the stock for that purveyor of cilantro-lime rice, carnitas, black beans and all-around flavorful goodness. In the true traditions of in depth analysis I did a simple survey on Google Trends for the search term "sucks" and an associated company name. I initially wanted to look for attitutes to Google's Adsense program but there wasn't sufficient data to return an answer (censorship or simply a win-win product?), so the search was broadened to improve results. The first comparisons were between Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. Google experienced the most 'suckage' by virtue of its size. The 2008 spike may have corresponded to the changes in its advertising TOS, but it didn't appear to impact the company over the long term and in general, the company has been irking people less since the start of 2006 [More...]

Anytime I see a well-written article by another college student, I pay extra attention. Such is the case with Naufal Sanaullah’s piece on why he thinks this recent rally is unsustainable. It’s quite a comprehensive bearish argument, with good points about the technical aspects of trading and a number of shots at the accuracy of last quarter’s bank earnings – and it will also serve as a good starting point for me to assess my own view of where the market is going. In early 2008 Dough Kass of Seabreeze Partners and TheStreet.com issued a sell short thesis on Berkshire Hathaway ("BRK") which outlined some of his views as to why BRK was an attractive short candidate. Recently, Kass has come out with some updates on his BRK short with some rather sensationalized titles such as "Is This the End of Warren Buffett?" Titles like that can certainly generate web traffic but doesn't change the fact that this sell short call - in the context of the current market - is based on a very weak thesis.
