More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. Thursday Watchlist

I am finding more charts that look good on the long side, although most would benefit from a low volume pullback. While the watchlist is dominated by long picks, I am not fully in the bullish camp yet. ...oil was the objective. Maybe. From ABC:Five years after the US-led coalition stormed into Iraq there is set to be another western invasion. This time it is the world's biggest oil companies leading the charge, 36 years after Saddam Hussein kicked them out. The oil giants are seeking access to Iraq's rich crude reserves, Australian companies BHP Billiton and Woodside are among them. The Iraqi government wants to make up for the lost opportunities under Hussein's rule and has the ambitious goal of doubling Iraqi oil production to more than 4 million barrels a day within five years. The argument that the economic rebound is for real, that the tide has turned for more companies than not, was bolstered by an Inquirer analysis of third-quarter revenue changes at companies in the Philadelphia area.
Revenue growth is crucial to replacing the 7.2 million U.S. jobs lost since December 2007.
Through Friday, 33 nonfinancial companies in the region with at least $10 million in quarterly revenue had reported results for the period around Sept. 30.
