A more recent addition to my transformational technologies portfolio, Medarex, has scored a huge win. The company, along with Massachusetts Biologic Laboratory, will get $60 million upfront from Merck for license rights to a monoclonal antibody that apparently cures C. difficile infection. They are eligible for another $165 million in milestones as well as royalties. Think about the service this company has done mankind. C. diff, as hospital diarrhea is called, is a growing cause of hospital deaths. Though many cases outside of hospitals are never diagnosed, we know it kills at least 30,000 Americans annually. One of the major reasons behind Pfizer's (PFE) interest in acquiring Wyeth (WYE) is the latter's focus on products outside of traditional pharmaceuticals – with 60% of Wyeth's revenue from last year derived from biological therapeutics and vaccines. TRENTON, N.J. - Health care giant Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday reported a meager 1 percent increase in its third-quarter net income, as generic competition slashed sales of several of its top drugs and the recession hurt consumer product sales.
In last year's third quarter, it had net income of $3.31 billion, or $1.17 per share.
Sales in Johnson & Johnson's biggest division, medical devices and diagnostics, rose 2.3 percent to $5.84 billion.

In last year's third quarter, it had net income of $3.31 billion, or $1.17 per share.
Sales in Johnson & Johnson's biggest division, medical devices and diagnostics, rose 2.3 percent to $5.84 billion.

Sep. 30--As Wyeth's acquisition by Pfizer Inc. took one step closer to completion yesterday, state legislators spearheading efforts to retain jobs here said they were fairly confident many positions would remain at Wyeth's regional operations.
"Representatives of both Pfizer and Wyeth have continued to assure us that we should not worry and they have continued to listen to the case that we have made for as many jobs as possible remaining in Pennsylvania," said State Sen. Andy Dinniman, a Democrat who represents parts of Chester and Montgomery Counties.
Wyeth employs about 4,500 people in the region -- about 3,600 in Collegeville and 900 in Great Valley and other sites.

The health care giant is jumping into the vaccine business by taking an 18 percent stake in Dutch biotechnology company Crucell NV.
A Wall Street analyst upgraded the consulting and outsourcing company to "Buy" and predicted improvement in its margins.
Xerox will buy Dallas-based outsourcer Affiliated Computer Services Inc. for $6.4 billion in cash and stock to broaden their offerings.
