“Streetwise” section out saying that United Rentals (URI) is the kind of co that would be hurt by a recession. The stock has collapsed to around 16. Though much of that derives from the dissolution of a proposed buyout of UR by Cerberus Capital Magmt, the stock is down to ‘03 levels. What's odd is that even though analysts have cut ‘08 EPS ests, UR recently announced preliminary ‘08 guidance of $2.80-3.00. That's based on rental rev growth of 3%, to $2.71bn, and margin improvement that is more than double '07's rise. In a recession, that guidance may prove optimistic, but UR has $2 a share in cash, a decent balance sheet, and trades at a P/E of less than 6x. If its earnings were to fall 50%, it would trade at a P/E around 12. Short of a nasty recession, UR's stock drop may present a long-term opportunity.[More...]

Oct. 22--The credibility of Kraft chief executive Irene Rosenfeld is at risk if the US food giant doesn't win Cadbury.
That's according to Evolution's analysts, who today posted a note entitled "Come on Irene", restating their buy recommendation on Cadbury's shares with a 900p price target.
Strong third-quarter results from the Dairy Milk maker yesterday have put pressure on Kraft to raise its bid.

Sep. 9--Mergers and acquisitions seem to be firmly back on the agenda after the summer break and City analysts, caught on the hop by Kraft's surprise move on Cadbury, were keen to second guess who might be the next predator or target.
Analyst Ian Shackleton said: "We see many of the Cadbury deal rationales cited by Kraft have relevance for some operators in global beer."
Moving sector, Freddie George at Seymour Pierce believes the Cadbury approach could flush out cross-border deals on the high street.

Heinz Finances Soar, an 'Anomaly' in Economic Downturn

Aug. 13--Record financial results for H.J. Heinz Co. would bring a smile to founder Henry John Heinz's face, Chief Executive Officer William R. Johnson said Wednesday.
"I believe the founder would have been proud of what we delivered last year," Johnson said, addressing more than 200 at the company's annual shareholders meeting in Westin Convention Center Hotel, Downtown.
Celebrating its 140th anniversary, Heinz the company is running on all cylinders -- despite a weak international economy, as well as wildly fluctuating prices for commodities used in its products and currencies used to buy and sell its products.

Shelby County Advised of Possible SEC Lawsuit Against Investment Firm

Jul. 17--Consulting Services Group, a Memphis-based investment advisory company, has warned the Shelby County government that the firm may be sued by the SEC.
The company gives advice to the county on how its pension fund should be invested.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's New York regional staff may recommend the filing of a civil lawsuit against the company as part of an ongoing corruption investigation in that state.

Apr. 11--A lawsuit accusing the U.S. chocolate industry of price fixing will be put on hold until the defendants can appeal a federal judge's decision not to throw the suit out.
However, Conner ruled that the parties can continue discovery while the appeal is pending.
Conner ruled last month that the plaintiffs provided enough evidence to allow claims of antitrust violations to proceed and granted them additional time to tie in the actions of the companies' foreign subsidiaries to the jurisdiction of U.S. courts.

Feb. 26--Executives at Cadbury are set to embarrass Britain's fat cat bankers.
They are voluntarily freezing their salaries despite another successful year in which profits grew 30pc.
Chief executive Todd Stitzer said: "I and my fellow directors will be taking a freeze on our annual salaries in 2009, but we had a strong year in 2008 and there will be bonuses."
