Will Obama Hurt The Profitability Of Payday Lenders?

With unemployment hitting records highs and consumers across the country strapped for cash, payday lenders and pawnshops seem like a obvious area to profit from this unfortunate trend. Pawnshops, of course, engage in supplying small loans to individuals using their personal valuables as collateral. Payday loans, also known as payday advances, are similar. The consumers gets a short-term loan using his next paycheck as collateral. Usually, the customer must hand over a post-dated check before receiving the cash. If he fails to return to the store and pay back the loan, the lender can take the amount right out of the customer’s checking account.<span[More...]

First Cash Financial Services (FCFS) Strong on Pawn Shops

First Cash Financial Servuces (FCFS) is another pawn shop operator/cash advance store but quite similar to EZCORP (EZPW) (heavier emphasis on pawn shops) rather than Cash America (CSH) which is more balanced among the two. After the whole sector has been beaten down of late based on Obama threats to the cash advance busines, it had a very nice day yesterday on earnings - one way or the other I intend to make a buck in this sector; so far it's been elusive. Ironically both FCFS and EZPW are making strong pushes into Mexico ...
I don't do gambling (i.e. pile into a stock ahead of earnings hoping the dice throw goes my way) but I did write that after all the suffering EZCORP (EZPW) has suffered through it was setting up for an upside surprise (Jan 21: EZCORP Suffering Due to Competitor's Warning) Further, we have earnings on the 22nd (tomorrow) so no reason to make a "bet" (and that's all it is) ahead of 50/50 proposition. If I had to guess however, I think the stock could be setting up for an upside surprise based on a solid earnings. Last night the company came through with yet ANOTHER solid earnings - same story as last quarter[More...]

EZCORP Suffering Due to Competitors Warning

Due to a weakening chart we cut back EZCORP (EZPW) from a 2.0% stake to what I call a holding position (0.1%) last Friday (Jan 16: Cutting Back EZCORP). Sometimes you get fortunate - the stock is down 8%+ today on a warning from competitor (and Cramer's pick in the space) Cash America (CSH). Now ....we did not like Cash America ourselves because it had a higher exposure to the cash advance business (rather than pawn shop) but it appears all these stocks are treated "the same" by the market, despite the different weightings of "cash advance" vs "pawn shop". Ironically EZCORP was one of the few stocks holding up yesterday. A lot of this sounds Cash America specific[More...]

For a long time, the conventional wisdom was that even if the economy headed south, the well-to-do would not be seriously affected. After all, they had plenty of money. A weak economy and falling prices would only bolster their purchasing power. Of course, those assumptions rested on the belief that those who were classified as being in the upper echelons were truly wealthy, and that their financial standing was not overly dependent on borrowed money or a steady paycheck. As it happens, that was not the case. And that is one reason why, as the Wall Street Journal reports, "People Pulling Up to Pawnshops Today Are Driving Cadillacs and BMWs." Well-to-Do Turn to Last-Resort[More...]

Cash America International, Inc. (NYSE: CSH) announced today that it expects its earnings for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009, to significantly exceed its previously released guidance for the quarter. The primary contributors to the higher-than-anticipated earnings for the quarter were better than expected performance from the Company’s pawn lending operations, both in the United States and Mexico, and lower loan losses associated with the cash advance product. In addition, the Company experienced greater than expected cash advance fee revenue in the quarter from its online cash advance offerings in some of the states that had announced adverse changes in legislation and/or regulations in 2008 but have not been implemented thus far in 2009 as previously expected. Some of these changes remain pending which could reduce cash advance revenue in these states in future periods. Management currently anticipates earnings per share for the first quarter of 2009 to be between 76 and 78 cents per share compared to its previous expectations of between 61 and 65 cents per share. This compares to 86 cents per share for the same quarter in the prior year of 2008.[More...]
