Today will be an interesting follow-up case study in how central banks impact markets.Late in yesterday’s session in the US equity markets, there was enhanced discussion of the prospects for a major Fed rate cut, which propelled share prices up +230 points in the Dow 30 Average.This morning the Bank of England and European Central Bank will announce their policy decisions. And they’re off!Coming around the clubhouse turn it’s Hang Seng at 29,133 followed by Bombay at 18,814, Nikkei is in third at 17,458 followed by The Dow at 14,078, who is coming on strong. Filling out the pack we have the NYSE at 10,264 and falling behind are Dax at 8,044, FTSE at 6,705 and CAC at 5,871.Sure it’s a silly way to rank the markets but what difference does it make? There is no sense of reality to these levels from a historical standpoint so what does it matter how you measure them. The Wall Street Journal reports that MetLife (MET) recently approached life and property insurer Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG) about a merger transaction, citing people familiar with the talks.
IBM (IBM) posts $2.05, vs. $1.68 a year ago, third quarter EPS from continuing operations on 5% revenue rise.
PNC Financial (PNC) and Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) are among the potential bidders, the paper added.

Medicare Fraud Suspects Linked to Check-Cashing Chain: Investigators Look into the Link Between Medicare Fraud Fugitives and a Defunct Chain of Check-Cashing Stores.

Aug. 25--Suspected of fleeing to Cuba, three Miami-Dade brothers wanted for Medicare fraud are accused of laundering $24 million of their bounty by using shell companies to cash checks at a local chain of stores, according to a federal court record.
The Benitez brothers' link to La Bamba Check Cashing -- the now-defunct business that was indicted along with its president in a separate case this year -- reveals a new dimension to the way the siblings laundered some of their $84 million in ill-gotten Medicare payments to the Dominican Republic.
The latest accusation against Carlos, Luis and Jose Benitez -- described by authorities as the poster boys of South Florida's Medicare fraud fugitives -- surfaced in an FBI document filed in federal court this month.

Freddie Mac (FRE) and Fannie Mae (FNM) shares are seen weaker after remarks from former St. Louis Fed's Poole saying that the housing agencies were "technically insolvent."
Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) posts 5.8% June same-store sales [without fuel], 6.4% higher with fuel, 12% higher total sales.
Because of improved sales results during second quarter, it raises EPS forecast to $0.82-$0.84.
