After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. Ctrip.com International, Ltd. (CTRP) reported third quarter results that were in-line with market expectations. However, the company's fourth quarter sales guidance was well below expectations. We were already below consensus with our fourth quarter EPS estimate, so our 2008 EPS stays at $0.89. However, we lowered our 2009 EPS estimate from $1.11 to $0.96, as we believe the weakening sales trends will continue into the first half of 2009. The company's near-term prospects have deteriorated because slowing global economic growth has reduced the demand for travel-related services, and that is hurting Ctrip.com's revenues and margins. Both Baidu.com (BIDU) and Ctrip.com (CTRP) have taken serious whacks this week, showing yet again the risk to holding individual equities in this type of market is simply too great - hence the better focus appears to be ETFs as the "risk" part of risk/reward is overweighted - bad news is not just punishing stocks now, it is obliterating them. Another volatile week in the back pocket, and no real improvement in conditions. A lot of bad days spiced by one huge reversal for half a day - but we ended up significantly lower on the week. Technically, we continue to grind at best sideways and an honest assessment would say "lower". Last week we named our range as 850 on the downside to 970s/980s on the upside on the S&P. We penetrated below that Thursday (840 was the line in the sand), set off a rash of stop orders as we quickly collapsed to S&P 820 and then a technical reversal which trading desks jumped on to make some quick short term gains ensued. We are downgrading Ctrip.com International, Ltd. - ADR (CTRP) shares from Buy to Hold. Longer term, Ctrip.com is well-positioned to generate strong growth as more Chinese consumers use online travel-related services. Unfortunately, the company's near-term picture is not as bright. Slowing global economic growth is reducing the demand for travel-related services, and that is negatively impacting Ctrip.com's revenues and profit margins. We are lowering our estimates for 2008 and 2009 to reflect slower expected growth and lower profit margin assumptions. Our target price of $29 is about 26x our 2009 EPS estimate. CTRP shares trade at 31x our 2008 EPS estimate and 25x our 2009 EPS estimate. This valuation is reasonable, given the company's long-term growth prospects.
