Today's Wall Street Journal had an article that asked the question "Can Rally Run without Revenue?" Is the revenue situation really that bad? Let's take a quick look at some the data compiled through the Alert HQ process. After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I am now calling the Growth Report. TiVo Inc. (TIVO), the creator of the digital video recorder, recently reported second quarter fiscal year 2010 results. The company delivered improved results compared to its guidance. Dollar Financial Corporation’s (DLLR) fourth quarter earnings came in at 39 cents per share, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 35 cents per share. However, total revenues declined to $124.4 million from $150.3 million in the same quarter last year. Micros Systems (MCRS) designs, manufactures, markets, and services enterprise information solutions for the hospitality and specialty retail industries. Yesterday, the company posted better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Earlier today, PetroChina Company Ltd. (PTR) reported results for the six months ended June 30, 2009. Net income for the period was 50.5 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), down more than 7% from 54.4 billion yuan ($7.7 billion) a year earlier.[More...]

Water is, by far, the most important element we need to survive. You can go a month without eating, but not even a week without water. Lack of adequate drinking water has killed almost 800,000 people this year. Now politicians are throwing billions of taxpayer dollars at water and wastewater systems. Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act sets $126 billion aside for infrastructure projects. The majority of this is for roadwork and water infrastructure. On top of that, $144 billion more is going to state and local governments. A large amount of that cash will be spent on these failing water systems. The markets had a bad day, as the Dow Jones closed down -0.19% to 8,410.65. The NASDAQ was down -0.54% closing at 1754.12, while the S&P was down -0.38% closing at 903.80. Oil and gold were both down settling at $53.84 and $904.30 respectively. The price of the 10-year was down, as yields closed at 3.163%. According to many unnamed sources, American International Group (AIG: 1.73, +0.27 (+18.49%)) will not be one of the supposed ten to nineteen financial institutions that the U.S. government will announce need to raise capital levels. Bears took the day as Wall Street ended lower on Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 245 points, and ended with 8,769 points. The Nasdaq composite index was also down, falling 53 points and finishing at 1,599 points. While the S&P 500 index was closed Wednesday at 906 points after falling 28 points. The three major U.S. indexes each lost approximately 3% for the day. The Russell 2000 index was down 17 points, and finished at 497 points. Oil prices were down significantly as were the equity markets, after slowly rising for the past week. The price for a barrel of oil was down $5.95, and settled at $42.63. Gasoline and heating oil futures were both down on the NYMEX. Gasoline was down to $1.08 a gallon, while heating oil finished at $1.54 a gallon. Electric Choice Arrives in Illinois

Oct. 28--Ameren Illinois customers who for years have been promised a choice of electricity suppliers now have one.
Chicago-based BlueStar Energy Services Inc. said Tuesday that it has started enrolling customers, becoming the first alternative electricity supplier to offer service to residential and small business customers in central and Southern Illinois.
The company, which already sells power to larger businesses in Illinois, Maryland and Washington, says it will offer lower electricity prices than the incumbent utilities through May 2010 by taking advantage of a decline in wholesale power prices.
