EIA Reports Surprise Gas Build - Analyst Blog

In its weekly release yesterday, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a surprise 2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) addition to natural gas stockpiles for the week ended November 27, far off analyst expectations that hoped for inventories to remain flat, or possibly even show a drawdown.

This takes the current storage level to a new record high of 3.84 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), which is up 14.0% from last year's level and 14.5% above the five-year range (as clear from the nearby chart from the EIA). Current stocks are 470 Bcf above last year’s level and 487 Bcf above the five-year average. The inventory addition was in sharp contrast to the five-year-average net withdrawal of 43 Bcf and last year's drawdown of 64 Bcf.??

Q2 Growth Report - Part 1

Today's Wall Street Journal had an article that asked the question "Can Rally Run without Revenue?" Is the revenue situation really that bad?

Let's take a quick look at some the data compiled through the Alert HQ process.

After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I am now calling the Growth Report. Part 1 compiles the list of stocks that have shown a year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings AND a sequential quarter-over-quarter increase in both revenue and earnings. Given the severity of the economic downturn, very few companies have been able to to pull off this trick.

The following table presents a comparison of the last two quarters:

The near term should see some interesting merger and acquisition activity, mostly smaller deals by larger contractors to fill in capability gaps - particularly in the security, defense electronics and aftermarket service business areas. Taking the uncertainty of current economic conditions into consideration, it is difficult to[More...]

Water is, by far, the most important element we need to survive. You can go a month without eating, but not even a week without water. Lack of adequate drinking water has killed almost 800,000 people this year. Now politicians are throwing billions of taxpayer dollars at water and wastewater systems. Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act sets $126 billion aside for infrastructure projects. The majority of this is for roadwork and water infrastructure. On top of that, $144 billion more is going to state and local governments. A large amount of that cash will be spent on these failing water systems. After all, we’ve already seen pipes burst throughout the country, and no one wants to be next governor on CNN trying to explain why the state didn’t fix its water pipes. Right now, there are a handful of dividend producing water infrastructure stocks that are giving investors the chance to profit from this[More...]

The Gas Prices Rollercoaster: Why Energy & Infrastructure Are Inextricably Combined by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist, Investment U Friday, January 16, 2008: Issue #917 President-elect Obama takes office in less than a week’s time. While many will be watching closely to see how he handles the ongoing financial crisis, I’ll be equally interested to see how he handles a far more ominous one: our ongoing energy and infrastructure crisis. Regular readers know I believe energy and infrastructure are inextricably combined. We need cheap energy to fuel sustained economic growth. And we need infrastructure in place to move and dispense the energy from its source to its destination. Today I’m going to give you a perfect example of how the two are intertwined, and how one can play off the other to create a positive benefit for all.

Nov. 29--Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has beefed up an existing state law to target companies that add charges to consumers' telephone bills for services they never ordered, a scam known as "cramming."

Cramming happens when a third-party provider responsible for billing customers on behalf of phone companies adds services, such as enhanced extra special voice mail, without a customer's consent.

The amendment to the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, which Quinn signed Sunday, calls for third-party providers to disclose any new charges and terms, and requires an a separate independent party to confirm with customers any new services before they are billed.

Oct. 16--It seemed too good to be true in 1997 when then-Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar signed a bill to deregulate the state's retail electricity markets.

Today, seven years after the supposed start to the era of consumer choice in the Illinois electricity market, residential customers remain tethered to their electric utilities -- a point reinforced by some customers who showed up at a recent public hearing in the Metro East to speak out against Ameren's proposed $226 million rate increase.

Bob Porter, vice president of North American sales for Chicago-based BlueStar Energy Services Inc., which sells electricity to business customers in Illinois and other states, says Ameren's residential customers in Illinois will have a choice of electric suppliers by yearend.
