Spotlight On: Biotech The U.S. biotechnology industry includes about 1,000 companies, of all sizes, with combined annual revenues close to $50 billion. Large companies include Amgen, Biogen Idec, Genetech, Genzyme, Life Technologies and Monsanto. Because so many drugs are now developed using biotechnology, the biotech and pharmaceutical industries overlap. Demand for biotechnology products and services is driven primarily by the willingness of insurers to pay for new medical treatments. With the pending introduction of Obamacare, new uncertainties are introduced to this industry. Contract Research Organizations Being Taken to Woodshed

It is interesting to watch the bear market come to visit every corner of this market. Up until last week the contract research organizations were one area that were holding up relatively well. Last Tuesday, ICON (ICLR) reported a stellar quarter, reaffirmed guidance ... and it has not mattered one iota as competitors in the space who have reported since have made comments that have caused everyone in the group to suffer. What I love most is how the stronger dollar is used as one of the "problems" for the US based CRO's, and ICON gets hit off that even though they are in Ireland and thus use the Euro - hence should see a tailwind from a stronger dollar/weaker Euro. WuXi PharmaTech And Covance Nix Partnership

WuXi PharmaTech and Covance have decided not to continue their previously announced joint ownership of a preclinical laboratory, currently under construction. WuXi will now own 100% of the 323,450 square feet Suzhou facility, which was the company’s original intention. After announcing its plans to build the Suzhou facility one year ago, WuXi announced in June that it would form a 50-50 joint partnership with Covance to own and operate the facility. Now, it’s back to Plan A, which, emphasizing the positive, WuXi says will give shareholders “the full benefit” of the facility. No explanation was given for the change of plans. More details...
