It appears a lot of traders are switching to the short side quickly, so we may get a short squeeze soon. However, I will be adding short into strength. I added some short exposure in the REIT sector today, and will be looking for opportunities to short the financial sector as well, although I am still a bit nervous in the latter case. Here are a few to consider: - PSB: REIT, business parks. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_08bdwZ8f6Hw/Se3XoipoYQI/AAAAAAAADDc/DjpDvb6ZlSw/s400/2009-04-21-psb1yr.png" border="0"[More...]

Day End Summary

I've been positioned short since last week, and up until today my account was holding up pretty well, considering. Today was a bit more painful. I covered my UBS short, but otherwise I'm sticking with my positions for now. The SPX 800 level was much talked-about, and shorts were scrambling to cover with the strong close. At the same time, volume appears to be just slightly above average on a day that saw index ETF's up between 6 and 9 percent. The buying may continue, but I do not see this as a good place to cover shorts that are under water. For now, we still have a V-shaped move off of the lows on mediocre volume, with resistance remaining above. SPY is now peeking out of its downtrend channel, but it is not free and clear of resistance. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"[More...]

Corrections Corp. of America (CNX) is the largest private owner and operator of correctional and detention facilities in the United States. The company owns and operates medium and maximum level security facilities for the US Federal government, 20 state agencies and numerous local agencies. We reiterate our Buy rating on shares of CXW prior to the release of third-quarter results. Corrections Corp. holds a significant market share advantage over its peers, with a substantial pipeline of additional capacity scheduled to be added to the portfolio over the next two years. The company is the clear leader in an industry with a strong outlook, supported by favorable economic and demographic trends. We consider the current price to represent an attractive entry point.
Bank of America is out with an interesting defense on Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE:CXW) noting that over the past week, they have not come across any negative news items or concerns that would justify the -11.6% move in CXW’s stock (versus +0.3% for the S&P500). Actually, to the contrary, siance its presentation at their conference (Sep 16), there have been several positive data points from CA that they believe provide incremental visibility into earnings over the next several quarters while also eliminating the CA overhang concerns from last quarter’s earnings call in early Aug. Positive CA data points: 1) inmate re-ramp at Tallahatchie facility in sight (incremental EPS visibility into 4Q while eliminating overhang concerns from 2Q earnings call);[More...]

Sometimes it seems to me that investors overlook some potentially high returns by overlooking "boring" companies. Occasionally I even find myself overlooking such companies. I think it's easy to get lost in the exciting share price swings of a company like Apple (AAPL) and while there is great money that can be made by taking advantage of such volatile price swings, it is important to recognize that there are other less "sexy" ways to make a healthy return. It might seem unbelievable to you when I say that a fundamentally sound company with solid, consistent and guaranteed revenues can be an overlooked stock that trades below $30 dollars a share.
We reiterate our Sell rating on shares of LoopNet (LOOP) following the release of second-quarter financial results. Although the company owns the leading online commercial real estate marketplace, we believe that a challenging near-term operating environment will curtail share price appreciation. Continuing macro-economic challenges will likely put stress on the commercial real estate sector, in our opinion, as slower economic growth combined with tight access to debt capital may limit transaction activity. Various key operating metrics began to weaken during the second quarter, and we believe that a lower multiple is appropriate at this time. We expect that transaction volume in the commercial real estate industry will contract in the near-term. Weakening operating fundamentals will likely put pressure on occupancy rates and hinder owners' ability to drive rental rates[More...]
