Biotech Industry - Industry Outlook

Last year, the Biotech industry as a whole achieved a much better performance than the market. Both the NASDAQ Biotech Index and AMEX Biotech Index outperformed all three major market indices (Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ Composite and S&P 500) in a large margin. The major indices declined as much as 40% while the NASDAQ Biotech Index declined only 12.6% and the AMEX Biotech Index was down 17.7%. However, when the recession enters into its third year, the Biotech industry is not doing better than the market, which has been evident by the indices' performances. As of April 9, 2009, AMEX Biotech Index declined 3%, and the broader NASDAQ Biotech Index was down 6.8% (AMEX Biotech has 20 biotech companies while NASDAQ Biotech Index includes over 130 component companies). Although the Dow and S&P 500 also declined a similar percentage, technology-laden NASDAQ actually has a gain of 4.8%, which is more comparable to the biotech indices. See[More...]

Verisign, Inc. (VRSN) reported $303 million in revenues during Q2, up 17.1% y/y but down 14.4% q/q. Revenues from core business (Domain Names, SSL Certificates, and Identity and Authentication Services (IAS), came in at $233 million. GAAP EPS came in at ($0.35) for the quarter. Pro-forma EPS of $0.25 exceeded our estimate by $0.03. Core business generated a non-GAAP operating margin of 34.2%, up from 30.3% registered in Q1 2008. Growth in the naming business slowed down. The management provided Q3 revenue guidance of $236-241 million. They remain confident of exiting 2008 with an operating margin of 35%. BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J., Oct. 30, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:CYCC) (Nasdaq:CYCCP) ("Cyclacel" or the "Company") announced today that it received a Nasdaq Staff Deficiency Letter on October 27, 2009 indicating that the Company fails to comply with the minimum bid price requirement for continued listing set forth in Marketplace Rule 5450(a)(1).
The letter gives Cyclacel notice that the Company's bid price of its common stock has closed under $1.00 for the last 30 business days.
The Nasdaq notice has no effect on the listing of the Company's common stock at this time.

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Announces Second Quarter 2009 Financial Results

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today financial and operating results for the second quarter of 2009. The Company's net loss for the quarter was $7.0 million or $0.34 per share. This net loss included a non-operating expense of a payment under guarantee of $1.7 million and restructuring costs of $0.4 million. This compared to a net loss of $8.5 million or $0.42 loss per share for the same period in 2008. Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it completed its previously announced registered direct offering through the sale of shares of its common stock and warrants for gross proceeds of $3.4 million, before deducting placement agent fees and offering expenses, in a registered direct offering with select institutional investors led by Special Situations Fund. The offer included the sale and issuance of 4.0 million units, at a purchase price of $0.85 per unit, with each unit consisting of one share of the Company's common stock, a five-year warrant to purchase 0.18 shares of common stock, at an exercise price of $1.00 per share, exercisable beginning six months after the date of issuance, and a seven-month warrant to purchase 0.625 shares of common stock, at an exercise price of $1.00 per share, exercisable beginning six months after the date of issuance. If fully exercised, the seven-month warrants would produce additional gross proceeds of $2.5 million. BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J., July 24, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:CYCC) (Nasdaq:CYCCP) ("Cyclacel" or the "Company") announced today that it has entered into definitive agreements to raise $3.4 million in gross proceeds, before deducting placement agent fees and other estimated offering expenses, and up to an additional $2.5 million, in a registered direct offering with select institutional investors led by Special Situations Fund.
"The proceeds of the financing together with our current cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities should provide the financial resources to continue clinical development of sapacitabine, the company's lead drug, including a pivotal trial in patients with hematological malignancies," said Spiro Rombotis, President and CEO of Cyclacel.

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced interim data from the lead-in stage of a Phase 2 randomized clinical trial of oral seliciclib , a novel cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor, in patients with solid tumors and previously-treated nasopharyngeal carcinoma at the 45th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology . The data demonstrated that oral seliciclib could be safely administered in two dosing schedules which were well tolerated and met the criteria for proceeding to the randomized stage of the study. Seliciclib treatment resulted in prolonged stable disease in previously-treated NPC patients suggesting seliciclib inhibits tumor growth in NPC. Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced interim data from a Phase 2 randomized clinical trial of oral sapacitabine , a novel nucleoside analog, in elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes at the 45th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology . The data demonstrated that oral sapacitabine is active in AML across all three dosing schedules tested and that prolonged administration is feasible in the outpatient setting. Activity was also observed in the ongoing MDS stratum of the study.
