The S&P 500 comprises of 500 large cap common stocks actively traded in the United States. The largees public companies that are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are included in the S&P 500 index. The S&P 500 index was lunched in 1957 and is a value weighted index which is based on the 500 American stocks with the largest market capitalizations. With (accurate) earnings proving to be a difficult metric to rank stocks I took a look at stocks which paid a dividend yield of at least 5%, had no long term debt but had a market cap over $100m. The list was short, coming in at 32 stocks. Top of the list was Eaton Vance Risk Managed Diversified (ETJ); it had a quoted yield of 10.2% and has a market cap of $1.2bn. Dominion Resources (D: 36.26, +1.08 (+3.07%)) released fourth-quarter earnings on January 29th before the bell. They announced earnings per share of $0.72 and revenue of $4.17 billion. This is compared to earnings of $0.52 per share and revenue of $3.65 billion in the same period in 2007. Nov. 6--Dominion Virginia Power customers would get back more than $400 million from the company under an agreement the state's largest utility has reached with the state attorney general's office and a group of large ratepayers.
If approved by the State Corporation Commission, the proposed settlement of several pending Dominion Virginia Power rate cases would save a typical residential customer -- using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a month -- about $80 next year, the company said.
By agreeing to maintain Dominion Virginia Power's base-rate structure at pre-Sept.
