Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." Gold Participation and Income Fund Completes Closing of Over- Allotment Option and Separation of Combined Units

TORONTO, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - Gold Participation and Income Fund (the "Fund"), a closed-end investment trust designed to provide investors with Canadian-dollar exposure to the long-term performance of gold bullion and gold equity securities while providing a monthly distribution stream and mitigating downside risk, is pleased to announce that it has completed an issuance of an additional 50,000 Combined Units pursuant to the exercise of the over-allotment option granted to the Fund's agents in its recently completed initial public offering.
Altogether, the Fund has raised gross proceeds of $28.2 million under the offering, including the proceeds from the over-allotment option.
The Fund is also announcing the separation of the Combined Units into Units and Warrants to purchase Units of the Fund.

TORONTO, July 20 /CNW/ - Gold Participation and Income Fund (the "Fund"), a closed-end investment trust designed to provide investors with Canadian-dollar exposure to the long-term performance of gold bullion and gold equity securities while providing a monthly distribution stream and mitigating downside risk, is pleased to announce the exchange ratios for the Fund's exchange option (the "Exchange Option") with respect to its initial public offering.
Under the Exchange Option, prospective purchasers had the opportunity to exchange Shares of SPDR Gold Trust and freely- tradeable listed securities of issuers in the S&P/TSX Global Gold Index or the S&P/TSX 60 Index (collectively, "Exchange Securities") for Combined Units of the Fund (each Combined Unit consisting of one Unit of the Fund and one Warrant for one Unit).
Under the Exchange Option, the number of Combined Units issuable in exchange for Exchange Securities deposited by prospective purchasers was determined by dividing the weighted average trading price of the Exchange Securities on the Toronto Stock Exchange, The New York Stock Exchange or The NASDAQ Stock Market, as the case may be, during the three consecutive trading days ending on July 17, 2009, as adjusted to reflect dividends declared or distributions pending which will not be received by the Fund (such adjusted trading price being the "Exchange Price") by $12.00 (being the issue price of a Combined Unit).

TORONTO, June 9 /CNW/ - Gold Participation and Income Fund (the "Fund"), an investment trust designed to provide investors with Canadian-dollar exposure to the long-term performance of gold bullion and gold equity securities, while providing a monthly distribution stream and mitigating downside risk, is pleased to announce that it has filed and received a receipt for its preliminary prospectus from the securities regulatory authority in each province of Canada.
The offering is expected to close in mid-July 2009.

Treasuries: Smart Plays in Tricky Times

So much for the Treasury bubble.
Yields on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2% in December, as bond prices rose 12% over just three months [bond prices and yields move in opposite directions].
The price of the 10-year note has declined about 10% from its December high and yields on May 27 were 3.76% -- near pre-crisis levels.

Pound Continues Its Climb Against Dollar

THE pound continued to climb against the dollar this morning, hitting $1.5792 -- up from January's 23-year low of $1.35.
The dollar was also weaker against both the euro and the yen.
Meanwhile demand for gold continued to rocket in the first quarter of the year, the World Gold Council (WGC) said yesterday, although it is wary investors rather than recession-spooked consumers are fuelling the booming growth.

Investing: Playing a Pullback in the Dollar

With signs of improving economic conditions worldwide, investors are once again starting to consider higher-risk vehicles such as currencies.
The spark for the mini-rally: a combination of encouraging remarks by Timothy Geithner about improving credit markets and signals that Fed officials are willing to raise the mortgage and Treasury bond purchasing programs beyond the $1.75 trillion the Fed has already agreed to buy, according to Action Economics.
The 10-week rebound in equity indexes around the world has sped the dollar's retreat against the euro and other key foreign currencies.

Dizzy, Dollar Investors Lack Conviction

For investors who keep a close watch on the U.S. dollar, the last few weeks have probably made their eyes hurt.
The greenback has felt the effects of a six-week stock rally of questionable sustainability; a flurry of government moves to revive the credit markets; mixed first-quarter earnings results for large U.S. banks; mounting speculation about bankruptcy for two of the big three U.S. auto makers; and policy pronouncements from international finance officials.
The Bull fund had a combined net outflow of $10.9 million for November and December, followed by an inflow of over $4.7 million in January as public optimism about the start of a new Administration in Washington took hold.
