Motorola (MOT) Wins First LTE Contract

Motorola (MOT) recently announced that its Home & Network Mobility business unit was selected as a key development partner of KDDI Corp.’s next-generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. This is Motorola’s first public order for LTE technology. KDDI is the second-largest wireless service provider in Japan. Motorola will implement the basic RAN (Radio Access Network) infrastructure and base stations for the KDDI’s LTE network. Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, we believe that the contract size may exceed $1 billion. Earlier, KDDI had estimated spending about $5.3 billion for installing a countrywide LTE network. KDDI is expected to launch its LTE service in December 2012. The Japanese wireless market is quickly gaining maturity. KDDI faces stiff competition from[More...]

NTT DoCoMo a Buy, Post-Report - Analyst Blog

NTT DoCoMo (DCM), the largest mobile service provider in Japan, announced third quarter (ended December 31) fiscal 2009 financial results below our estimates. Performance was impacted by higher depreciation charges and other operating expenses. The company currently maintains over 50% share of the Japanese wireless market. DCM's discount-priced service plans, together with installment-based systems for selling handsets, progressed as customer churn rates improved significantly. Stronger foreign currency rates, with respect to the Yen against Dollar, have also raised valuation levels of DCM ADR shares. Operationally, the company upgraded 98% of its total coverage area with 3G HSDPA technologies, and its emerging 4G LTE network is likely to be installed by 2010. We reiterate our Buy recommendation[More...]

Best Performing Stock of 2008

I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. With that said, I am always curious to see what stocks held up over the long run... folks, no matter what happens (short of 8%+ rally here in the next 3 days) we are projecting the worst year in the markets at least since the[More...]

Best Performing Stocks Of The Past Quarter

Back in early October I wrote in (Oct 1: Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide) how there simply was no asset class (ex US Treasuries and US Dollar), no sector, no country to hide in. Everything stunk, and in fact it got worse in the ensuing weeks. September, October, November 2008 might be the worst 3 months ever (I don't have the date) but if not, it has to be in the top 3. We used to run a weekly screen here to identify areas of relative strength - it's been useless for months on end. But for curiousity sake I ran it to see the best performers over the past quarter. First-quarter adjusted operating earnings from continuing operations came in at 71 cents per share, a nickel ahead of our estimate, supported by organic revenue growth as well as margin expansion. We were pleased with the 1Q08 results, as the company was able to grow its top-line as well as the margins, despite unfavorable market conditions. Further, AOC continues to invest heavily in its core businesses, while exiting the non-core segments. The company recently sold Combined and Sterling as part of its strategy to exit its capital intensive insurance underwriting business.
