Discover Financial (DFS) - Quite Solid Results All Things Considered

I have a long Discover Financial (DFS) position married against a short Capital One (COF) position; but in this day and age such hedging strategies are moot points. Every stock in a sector goes (or more rarely nowadays, down) as based on HFT algorithms. Differentiating between companies within a sector is moot as all go in the same direction. We're slowly adjusting to this reality even though we've been pointing it out for over 2 years.[More...]

Discover Financial Services (NYSE: DFS) To Offer $500M In Stock

Well that was exquisite timing by Discover Financial (DFS) - ironically this was one of the stronger stocks in my entire watch list yesterday. So were the other credit card companies actually - at $500M this offering is a 10% dilution to the current $5B market cap - the proceeds are to pay back part of the TARP; the stock was down 7% in after hours yesterday. To show how different of a market we have now versus a few months ago, if this had been done in April (with a lower stock price, and far greater dilution) high 5s would of gone off across the CNBC set and the stock would of been up 25% after hours. Ah, the good ole days[More...]

Discover Financial (NYSE: DFS) Surges On Analyst Upgrade

I've been taking a serious look at Discover Financial (DFS) the past 7-8 days as it seemed poised to break out of a recent range. Why buy a credit card company in these times? Why not - squiggly line analysis is all that matters to the computers. Profitability? Not in 2009 ... about a $1 loss estimated. 2010? Nah - not so much there either. But DFS is dirt cheap on 2012 earnings... and again, the computers have taken a liking to her and what HAL9000 likes we must chase into. The stock has been under the 200 day moving average for a few months, after a false breakout in early May. Finally, Thursday it broke above the 200 day, which is typically when I'd jump in. Then Friday it broke right back below that key level, which is typically when I smack myself in the forehead. But an analyst came to the rescue with a positive note and $14 price target. Boo and Yah. Volume is nothing to get excited[More...]
