Several reputable news sources are now covering the breaking story that China will likey raise is gold reserves. They are talking about adding 4000 tonnes. To put this in perspective, thats about equal to the ENTIRE global demand in a typical year for gold. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) has filed a 13F disclosing most (but not all) of its holdings. Information regarding two railroads, Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Union Pacific (UNP), was omitted from the public report and filed separately with the SEC (according to the public 13F). Changes getting a lot of attention online and in print include: Dow Jones & Company (DJ): This is a new position. Berkshire held 2,781,800 shares of Dow Jones as of June 30th, 2007. Some people seem confused by this one. They shouldn't be. It's simple arbitrage. Shares of Dow Jones have traded below Murdoch's offer for some time allowing Berkshire to accumulate an arbitrage position in the stock. The WSJ reports that DirecTV (DTV) is expected to announce a wholesale agreement today with Current Group to provide high-speed Internet service over electric-power lines. Just when everybody thought gold bullion was down and out and embarking on a downward spiral, the shine returned. According to the WSJ, federal tax authorities are seeking data from Citigroup (C) and Lehman (LEH) to determine whether complex derivatives trades they engineered for hedge-fund and other clients were designed primarily to avoid taxes. Citi and Lehman have received information document requests, or so-called IDRs, from the IRS relating to the use of derivatives by offshore investors, including some big hedge funds, to sidestep withholding taxes on US stock dividend. According to the WSJ, News Corp (NWS) reached a tentative agreement for the purchase of Dow Jones (DJ) at its original $5bn offer price. The deal will be put to the full Dow Jones board this evening for its approval. The deal still faces its biggest hurdle - getting approval from the Bancroft family. Michael B. Still, Lenexa-based Bats Exchange Inc. launched its Bats 1000 stock index in July as its own daily read on Wall Street's ups and downs.
The Bats Exchange is an industry upstart that has grabbed about 11 percent of the daily trading volume in U.S. stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.

Citadel Permits Investors to Again Withdraw Funds

Oct. 30--(Dow Jones) Citadel Investment Group is allowing its investors to withdraw their money from the $14 billion Chicago hedge-fund firm, 10 months after it put up "gates" that prevented investor withdrawals, according a letter sent to investors Thursday.
The move to return cash comes on the heels of a sharp rebound in the performance of Citadel's flagship hedge funds after a difficult 2008 when the firm halted investor withdrawals.
Citadel's two big funds, Wellington LLC and Kensington Global Strategies, are up about 57 percent, the investor letter said.

Federal support for spending on cars and homes drove the economy up 3.5 percent from July through September.
For the Obama administration, the positive report on economic growth is a delicate one: It wants to take credit for ending the recession.

Regional Economy Shows a Slight Growth Upturn

Oct. 30--On the same day the U.S. government confirmed that the national economy is growing again, Kansas City area business leaders heard that the region is recovering even faster.
Even with the renewed growth, economist Frank Lenk said Thursday, the regional economy could take months to recover, and years to make up lost jobs.
The regional economy is likely to grow 2.4 percent in the next 12 months, according to the annual economic outlook from Lenk, the chief economist of the Mid-America Regional Council.

PERS Investments Perk Up at Last: Public Employees Retirement System's Losses Prompted Cuts in Benefits

Oct. 26--CARSON CITY -- Happy days apparently are here again for participants in Nevada's Public Employees Retirement System as its investments have soared in value by $6 billion since March.
Ken Lambert, the PERS investment officer, said the system's investments now are worth $21.4 billion, up nearly 40 percent since they hit a bottom of $15.4 billion on March 6.
"We are up 40 percent from our bottom," Lambert said.

Stone, who was laid off from Tellium Inc., started DJ Ken Stone.com in 2006 after working part-time jobs, including one as a consultant for a Web development company and another in information technology at Rutgers University.

Oct. 16--The Capital Region's unemployment rate jumped in September, led by a big drop in the number of government jobs.
The regional rate of joblessness climbed to 7.2 percent, up from 7 percent in August and 5.1 percent a year earlier, according to new state Department of Labor statistics.
The drop results, in part, from state and local budget cuts and from the state's refusal to fill some open positions.
