Playing With Paycheck Loan Stocks

Stock market players are always looking for great investments, and some are turning to public payday lending companies like American Cash Advance. However, others think this investment is risky due to the negative regulation of the industry. Proponents and investors in these companies believe they have a niche in a capitalistic society that needs cash flow to run smoothly. Opponents argue that they are too unregulated and can cause further financial trouble to people who take them out. Investors have assumed that the fact that people take out payday loans when they are short of cash, means they are a recession-proof industry. Since few markets are performing well and many experts fear a recession, public payday lending companies <img border="0" align="right" src="http://www.nationalpayday.com/images/logo.jpg"...[More...]

We wanted to get a few specifics from her on what investors should be expecting. You cover banks and other specialty finance companies that are being negatively affected by subprime mortgage problems. Are the companies suffering the most the ones with the highest exposure to subprime lending? Yes, the companies which have direct or indirect exposure to subprime mortgages have suffered the most. But as of now the problem is not limited to the subprime loans. In fact, subprime loans probably represent only about 25% of the problem loans. There are substantial problems in second mortgages, hybrid intermediate-term ARMs (adjustable-rate mortgages) and Pay Option ARMs. Deterioration in housi[More...]

Fiscal 2010 First Quarter Highlights

Total consolidated revenue, which was $141.8 million for the quarter, was unfavorably impacted by higher unemployment and the Company's more conservative approach to consumer lending and cashing checks in the midst of the weakened global economy, as well as the closure of a number of underperforming U.S. financial services stores during the prior fiscal year.

The consolidated loan loss provision, expressed as a percentage of gross consumer lending revenue, improved to 14.8% for the fiscal first quarter compared to 18.7% for the three months ended September 30, 2008, again reflecting the Company's conservative approach to extending consumer credit in the midst of the weakened economy, and the implementation of what the Company believes to be industry leading proprietary credit scoring models for the Company's global loan products.

National Money Mart Company, a subsidiary of Dollar Financial Corp (NASDAQ:DLLR) and Canada's leading convenience financial service provider, today welcomed news that the Province of British Columbia will finalize its regulation of the payday loan industry as of November 1, 2009, including a maximum rate of borrowing, with a regime that will balance strong consumer protection with a viable payday loan industry.

Money Mart currently provides payday loans below the government's rate cap and is the lowest cost payday loan provider in British Columbia.

British Columbia follows Nova Scotia, which was the first province to be exempted from section 347 of the Federal Code on August 1, 2009, effectively enabling British Columbia to implement its own rates and regulations on November 1, 2009 with respect to the governance of payday lending.
