Moody's Upgrades Debt Rating On DPL & Subsidiary

Dayton, Ohio-based diversified energy utility DPL Inc. (DPL) and its subsidiary Dayton Power and Light Company were upgraded by Moody's Investors Service. On last Friday, June 26, Moody's upgraded the parent's senior unsecured debt rating to Baa1 from Baa2 and the subsidiary's senior secured debt rating to A1 from A2. The upside came from an approval for ESP settlement establishing rates till 2012 from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). The ESP was originally filed in October 2008 as required by Ohio Amended Substitute Senate Bill No.221 (SB 221). Under the terms of the settlement, DP&L will freeze base distribution and generation rates through 2012, with limited exceptions including changes in regulatory and tax laws,[More...]

Several large companies announced dividend increases over the past week. One of the most notable bullish calls came from the telecom sectors as AT&T (T) showed confidence in its business model by increasing its dividend payment to shareholders for the twenty fifth consecutive years. Despite the tough macroeconomic conditions AT&T (T) is still committed to raising its quarterly dividend. The board announced a 2.5% increase of the quarterly payment to to $0.41/share. The stock currently yields 5.70%. One thing that still concerns me with AT&T however is the high current dividend payout ratio. You could check my analysis of AT&T from this link.
Utilities to Keep Portfolios Warm - Zacks Analyst Interviews

Now that winter is just around the corner, we address how utilities may be a wise investment choice, especially in such a turbulent market. Zacks senior utilities industry analyst Jon Kolb helped give us some suggestions in this regard. Are you seeing some favorable signs within the utilities group, now that home heating season has begun? Recently, I have issued Buy reports on two regional utilities: DPL Inc. (DPL) and Edison International (EIX). OK, let's start with DPL. What can you tell us about this company?

Agco Corp. (AG) reported second quarter EPS of $1.34, above our estimate at $0.90, due to a smaller-than-expected loss in North America and continued robust growth in South America and the EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Asia] region. The sales growth was broad-based, with every geographic region posting a double-digit sales increase. The growth in commercial farm income and acreage is driving demand for high-horsepower tractors. While North America reported a loss, we expect a second-half profit recovery on the back of favorable currency translation, higher margins and double-digit sales growth. Our target price is $63.50, or 16.4x our FY08 EPS estimate. We were extremely pleased by the narrower loss in North America. AG reported a loss of $1.3 million, which was better than our expectations of -$11.8 million, and better than the year-ago level of -$14.8 million. Strong sales[More...]
