Aon Corporation (AOC) will release its 2Q08 earnings results after the market closes on July 31, 2008. A conference call is scheduled for the next morning. First-quarter adjusted operating earnings from continuing operations came in at 71 cents per share, a nickel ahead of our estimate, supported by organic revenue growth as well as margin expansion. We were pleased with the 1Q08 results, as the company was able to grow its top-line as well as the margins, despite unfavorable market conditions. Further, AOC continues to invest heavily in its core businesses, while exiting the non-core segments. The company recently sold Combined and Sterling as part of its strategy to exit its capital intensive insurance underwriting business. A List of Best Performing Stocks Year to Date

Since we have a break in the action here, instead of doing our normal best performing stocks of the week (not many made the list this week due to a poor market), this is a good time to look at what is performing best so far this year. Further, due the composition of the list and with many of these stocks due for a correction it's probably worthwhile to take a look now, as things might change relatively soon. We looked at a similar list in early November (Nov 4: How to Make 75% in 3 Months) when the list was dominated by large cap Chinese stocks, a few big cap tech stocks, Indian stocks, and fertilizer. Except for fertilizer most of those groups stunk for the better part of the following 5 months, and hence "returned to the mean". Audit of DRS Data Breach Completed

Oct. 13--An audit of a 2007 data breach of state taxpayer's personal information on a stolen laptop shows the state took too long to address the situation but has since made strides to prevent future incidents.
Two years ago, some 106,000 Connecticut taxpayers' names and Social Security numbers were compromised when an employee, now identified as Jason Purslow of the Department of Revenue Services, the state's tax-collection agency, left a laptop computer in a parked car on Long Island.
The laptop was stolen Aug. 17, but steps to address the problem were not taken until five days later, and all potential victims were not alerted until Aug. 31, according to the report.

ESSI Shareholders Cry Foul Over Sale

Nov. 7--Some stockholders of the former Engineered Support Systems Inc. filed a class-action lawsuit late Wednesday in St. Louis Circuit Court against the company, former CEO Michael Shanahan and other top executives, some of whom have been convicted in federal court of backdating stock options.
The suit claims that leaders of the Cool Valley-based defense contractor breached their fiduciary duty by selling the business at an undervalued price in an attempt to distance themselves from the risk of prosecution in the backdating.
More than 600 investors, who would qualify for the suit, lost up to $250 million in the 2006 sale of ESSI to DRS Technologies Inc., said Darren Robbins, an attorney for the San Diego law firm that filed the case.

At a glance, it would be easy to underestimate the importance of still being alive in the JLTV competition.
JLTV may end up being the largest Department of Defense contract ever issued when it's all said and done.
