DryShips, Inc.’s (DRYS) third-quarter earnings of 27 cents per share were 6 cents ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. This excludes a loss of $39.3 million or 15 cents per share associated with the valuation of the company’s interest rate swaps. However, earnings were down substantially from $3.53 per share in the prior-year quarter.[More...]

After a thrilling two-week rally in the stock market during early September, shippers began to fall. They had been enjoying a nice rally on the general premise of economic recovery, market stabilization, and rising materials prices. But suddenly on September 17th, the shipper sector broke, and leading names fell - plummeted, actually, at a much faster rate than the modest pullback in the general market would have implied.[More...]

Shipping Industry Stocks: DSX, DRYS, FRO, GNK, NAT, TNP

Perhaps there is no industry more sensitive to global economic activity than the international shipping industry. The financial crisis became a category 5 hurricane last September and blew the entire global shipping industry off course. All sectors of the shipping industry were affected – from oil tankers to dry bulk shippers to container ships. The sudden drying-up of credit, including trade finance, and collapsing trade volumes have changed the industry’s concerns completely. Only a year or so ago the concern in the shipping industry was whether the infrastructure of many countries, especially port facilities, was expanding rapidly enough to handle break-neck growth in shipping traffic volumes. As shipping rates have plunged, the concern now is whether the bottom in the shipping industry has been reached or whether there is further to go on the downside. The good news is that “green shoots” are appearing – again ships are waiting in[More...]

Advance In DRYS: Halt Or Retreat

Yesterday I was going to write a short article about the "green bar of death" but didn’t find the time. Where is this green bar? It is on the daily chart of DRYS. Take a look at the chart, and look at the days with the largest green bars. Then look what happened the days after that to the market. I’m saying that an outsized advance in DRYS has generally either called a halt to a market advance or marked the beginning of a market retreat. Yesterday DRYS had such a bar. That is one of the reasons I sold out most of my positions this morning. The Green Bar of Death had struck again. Of course, this verges on superstition. Or does it? Consider how new money finds its way into DRYS stock. It is apparent that DRYS does not[More...]
