Investing In Energy Efficiency Companies

Jim Rogers is a socialist.
(Not the famous investor and "Adventure Capitalist" Jim Rogers.)
The Jim Rogers I'm referring to is CEO of Duke Energy, one of the three largest utilities in the country. He tends to be a staunch conservative, and his company is one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in the country.[More...]

A new fuel technology – unveiled just two weeks ago – is about to revolutionize the energy business.
I saw it firsthand.
General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) asked me to present “The Future of Natural Gas” at the company’s Gas Turbine Symposium in Greenville, S.C. That’s where GE revealed a new generation of its market-leading turbine technology.[More...]

MARKET COMMENT October 20, 2009 TAKING A BREAK It was a pretty strange day. Logic would argue for a big rally following earnings from Apple, Texas Instruments and Caterpillar; but no, instead investors focused on weaker than expected housing data and sold. It’s like I said at the end of last night’s commentary: “that’s why they play the game.” As this is written, the “better than expected” earnings are rolling in from the likes of Yahoo and SanDisk.[More...]

Tickers For The Latest Portfolio Reshaping

Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad.

Most people and investment managers trade too often. They sell their winners too rapidly, and panic too soon on their losers. Now, I’m not advocating “buy and forget,” or Buffett’s statement, “Our favorite holding period is forever.”[More...]

Duke Energy Goes Green

Duke Energy Corp. (DUK) recently signed an agreement with Sun Edison and will buy electricity generated at the privately held company’s solar farm at Davidson County in North Carolina. The 16.1MW facility is touted as the largest photovoltaic solar farm in the U.S. The solar farm will serve dual purposes for Duke. It will add 16.1MW of annual capacity to its kitty. Secondly, it will go green. According to the company’s estimates, the same amount of electricity produced from fossil fuels would have emitted 32.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Duke Energy would then be required to offset it by spending more on carbon credits following the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The act stipulates stringent caps against carbon dioxide emissions. Duke Energy expects the facility to be[More...]

Cap and Trade Part Two: How We'll Profit

Not J.M., who writes, "Ask me if I am surprised. Congress (as well as local governments) treats us as cash cows, which in fact we are." Some readers didn't like questioning our government's huge new tax policy. R.R. writes, "Matt's article on the energy legislation is a political rant and fear mongering." And D.B. gripes, "I wish I could cancel and get my money back when I read your Republican and Libertarian views. Why don't you just stick to providing investment advice and leave the environmental commentary to scientists?" Well, D.B., I'd be sad to see you go.
