Revenues for the quarter increased 43.1% year-over-year to $396.2 million, driven by double-digit revenue growth in the Business, Technology and Management segment as well as the Medical and Healthcare segment. The two strategic acquisitions of U.S. Education and Fanor, also have also contributed positively to the top-line.
As hard as it might be for some to believe, the notion of retiring at the age of 65 or thereabouts is a fairly recent phenomenon. In the United States, according to a 1999 New York Times article, "The History of Retirement, From Early Man to A.A.R.P.," the roots of the movement largely trace back to the Great Depression, when high levels of unemployment stirred efforts to encourage older workers to lay down their tools and allow those who were younger to take their place. Under the circumstances, some might find it ironic -- or, perhaps, tragic -- that a similarly calamitous economic environment has spawned, as USA Today reveals in <a[More...]

Most investors like to pick stocks they think will rise. Short sellers pick stocks they think will fall. Enron is Chanos' most famous short sale. Chanos knew Enron was a broken company before the stock market. His "short sale" of Enron made a fortune when the stock collapsed... and made him famous on Wall Street. Jim Chanos is a smart guy and he's made a lot of money for his investors. Here at DailyWealth, we always pay attention to his investment ideas... as they are almost always profitable. Right now, Jim Chanos is selling short the for-profit education business. "Kids are graduating from these schools," Chanos says, "with associate and bachelor degrees... and running up $30,000... $40,000... $50,000... $60,000 in debt.
There has been a lot of talk about for-profit educators such as DeVry (DV) as unemployment continues to worsen. The thinking goes that people who are out of work tend to go back to school in order to improve their skills in the eyes of potential employers. We wrote a blog on this phenomenon in November (DeVry Thrives as Unemployment Spreads) when unemployment hit a 16-year high and the numbers have only gotten worse since. Since that post, the stock ran up 22% before DeVry reported its fiscal second quarter earnings, which were in-line with estimates. These results were actually[More...]

What Does Well In Slow Economy?

I have two ideas for slow economic times: prisons and schools. If you think about it you have two choices when you are out of a job: go to school to upgrade your skills and get a better job, orcommit crimeI hope the majority will pick the first choice. But the reality is both are growth industries in this economic climate. Enrollments in both are growing. Schools like ITT and Devry are doing very well and recording record growth in revenues. The market seems to reward their shareholders as most of school companies are hitting 52 week highs. The performance of schools industry is on fire and the market does not seem to care that some are over leveraged. As for prisons, it is also a growth industry. The government is running out of space in the federal prison system so they are contracting out this to companies like Prisons of America.
Stocks Fall, Recessions Abound… Education Stocks Go Up!

You know, in every environment there is something that prospers….even in recessions. However, many times people just think of defensive stocks like make up companies or alcohol or cigarette companies, food companies, etc. However, when stocks tank and corporate America slows down, the unemployment lines lengthen. When this happens, education stocks shine. Why? Because everyone knows they are competing against a glut of people at that time more than ever. You see, when there’s “full employment” and the job market is tight, it’s not as hard to get a job. But when few corporations are hiring and there are tons of people fighting over the same handful of jobs, the best way to get an edge is to get an education. Some may just get certifications but others will[More...]
