Since we're in earnings season I thought I would expand a bit on the topic of watching for opportunities as companies report their quarterly results. I've talked quite often about looking for opportunities with stocks that have been hammered even after a good report. Today I thought it'd be a half-decent idea to discuss the situation of when a stock you're watching shoots up after releasing earnings.
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce ($RIO) - quarterly results analysis

In this post I am going to analyze Vale’s (Stock Symbol:RIO) third quarter results. They were published a little bit earlier, on 23rd of October to be more exact. The company is displaying excellent financial results despite the current crisis. To be honest, I have been monitoring this company for quite long time. It attracted me about 1 year ago (I don’t remember exactly) when I saw it as a major portfolio holding of famous Quantum Fund, founded by George Soros. The second fact which made me curious was that the company belonged to one of Emerging markets - Brazil market. These circumstances forced me to deeply analyze the company. “What business is that company involved in?” - you will ask. In fact, it is a leading and largest producer and exporter of iron ore. However, the Vale’s business isn’t limited only with iron. The company is also a producer and exporter of nickel, copper, cobalt, potash,[More...]

Ways To The Success In System Trading In Equities And Futures

In this post I am going to provide some tips and infromation about how to form yourself as a successful system trader. Why system? Trading systems are the best way to control yourself from different biases that lead to bad investment decisions. You force yourself (or just make a trading robot, who makes all trades for you) to follow the specific predefined instructions. However, it isn’t all easy. The most difficult process of the making of a trader is selecting your strategy and timing. You need to find technical indicators that will form your system and may be specific fundamental data which will generate buy/sell long-term or short term signals. There is not much real info to learn and not matter how much books you read, as the majority of your success depends upon what’s in your brain. So, here are my tips: All markets - equities, futures, FOREX or bond have its particular charting or fundamental patterns. So, finding patterns that[More...]

Picks for Monday's Rally

Considering Friday's late day surge and the action in world markets to start the week, we are likely to get a strong rally today, and even possibly an intermediate term bottom. I plan to play this rally fairly aggressively, including looking for some advantageous entries premarket. Here are some of the names I am considering:- QLD, designed to provide twice the performance of the NASDAQ 100, is my first choice in index ETF's. It shows climax selling on last Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a high volume close in the green on Friday.<img alt=""[More...]

This situation is pretty common and can make life very frustrating for bargain hunters or people who just want to buy in at a good level. For me, Dawson Geophysical is a great, recent example. The stock was trading at levels it hadn't seen (from a valuation standpoint) for years, the company was doing great, but of course I did not have the cash in my account to jump forward with opening a position. For someone like me who has an unpredictable flow of cash to use for investing, it makes the situation all the more frustrating.

Dawson Geophysical Company today reported revenues of $64,625,000 for the quarter ending March 31, 2009, the Company's second quarter of fiscal 2009, compared to $78,363,000 for the same quarter in fiscal 2008, a decrease of 18 percent. The revenue decrease in the quarter was primarily the result of a previously announced reduction in active crew count of four crews during the second quarter of 2009 along with lower utilization of the remaining crews.[More...]
