PlainsCapital set for first US bank IPO in 2 years

BOSTON - Plenty of publicly traded banks have issued more stock this year to raise cash and bolster balance sheets damaged in the credit crunch.
Now, a Texas bank, PlainsCapital Corp., is seeking to go public to repay government bailout funds in what would be the first initial offering by a U.S. bank in more than two years.
PlainsCapital Corp. said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that it expects to offer 15 million shares of common stock at price range of $14 to $16 apiece.

Encore Bank Hires New Chief Lending Officer

Encore Bank, a subsidiary of US-based Encore Bancshares, has appointed Carmen Jordan as executive vice president and chief lending officer.
Ms Jordan was most recently senior vice president and manager of the corporate energy services lending division at Amegy Bank of Texas.

Few Texas Lenders Participating in Government Bailout

Jan. 18--Thanks, but no thanks.
Although a new survey finds that nearly half of all U.S. banks are interested in getting money from the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program, so far only five Texas-based lenders have participated, and Fort Worth-based Worthington National Bank has publicly announced that it won't take any.
"We don't need a bailout, and we think it's wrong for banks to take taxpayers' money when they don't need it," declared Greg Morse, Worthington's chief executive.

Some Healthy Local Banks Seeking Bailout Money

Nov. 15--Several local banks say they don't need the federal government's money, but they're asking for it anyway.
MetroCorp Bancshares is one that has applied to participate in the U.S. Treasury's Troubled Assets Relief Program, which is meant to inject capital into banks and get them lending again, even though it's well-capitalized.
"With the uncertainty moving ahead for the Houston economy, it just would be prudent to have additional capital," said David Choi, chief financial officer of the $1.6 billion bank.
