EIA Reports Surprise Gas Build - Analyst Blog

In its weekly release yesterday, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a surprise 2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) addition to natural gas stockpiles for the week ended November 27, far off analyst expectations that hoped for inventories to remain flat, or possibly even show a drawdown.

This takes the current storage level to a new record high of 3.84 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), which is up 14.0% from last year's level and 14.5% above the five-year range (as clear from the nearby chart from the EIA). Current stocks are 470 Bcf above last year’s level and 487 Bcf above the five-year average. The inventory addition was in sharp contrast to the five-year-average net withdrawal of 43 Bcf and last year's drawdown of 64 Bcf.??

Tickers For The Latest Portfolio Reshaping

Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad.

Most people and investment managers trade too often. They sell their winners too rapidly, and panic too soon on their losers. Now, I’m not advocating “buy and forget,” or Buffett’s statement, “Our favorite holding period is forever.”[More...]

May 5, 2009: Encana Looking Good

Encana is a large North American onshore producer of natural gas and crude oil, with major operations in Alberta, Canada (oil sands) and the United States. ECA's other operations include the transportation and marketing of crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs), as well as the refining of crude oil and the marketing of petroleum by-products. ECA was the largest producer of natural gas in North America last year. While divesting oversea operations, Encana is still adding to assets through both acquisition of high-grade fossil fuel property and smart extraction techniques - all in the relative safety of North America. In short, the management team in place within Encana is using, producing and expanding assets better than almost any other company within their sector. A Chesapeake Energy (CHK) it is not - and that is a good thing. Trading at $50.99/share, ECA has popped up the past few weeks, but I believe it is a great long[More...]

(7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. On average, analysts had expected earnings per share of $4.93 and revenue of $4.08 billion, according to Yahoo Finance. Yesterday was pretty much a lost day in the market. Very little of consequence happened. By the close, the DJIA’s small loss (-25.57 -0.32% to 8057.81) offset the small gain in the S&P (+2.17 +0.25% to 858.73), while the NASDAQ (+0.77 +0.05% to 1653.31) was flat. The Toronto Composite (+98.50 +1.07% to 9285.6) and the Toronto Venture Board (+11.89 +1.23% to 980.86) were stronger as the metal miners and goldminers enjoyed a good day. Except for Japan’s Nikkei 225 index (-0.92% to 8842.7), prices today were strong in the major international equity markets: Australia (+2.22% to[More...]

CALGARY - The Canadian Standards Association has published a blueprint to help oil and gas companies protect their pipelines from vandalism and sabotage - a need highlighted by recent bomb attacks on EnCana Corp.'s (TSX:ECA) operations in northeastern British Columbia.

CSA, in collaboration with the National Energy board, said Wednesday it has developed standards that pipeline owners and operators can use to identify risks and tailor systems to reduce those threats.

"We've already got a good system and this is going to make it better," said Suzanne Kiraly, president of standards for the CSA, a not-for-profit organization geared toward enhancing public safety and health.

Nov. 15--EnCana Corp., perhaps the largest natural-gas producer in North America, has chosen Luzerne County as its entry point into the Marcellus Shale, thanks to an exploratory agreement with WhitMar Exploration Co.

WhitMar, a Denver-based exploratory company, has already leased about 25,000 acres in Columbia and Luzerne counties, including in Fairmount, Ross, Lake, Dallas, Lehman, Jackson, Huntington, Union, Hunlock and the northwest corner of Plymouth townships.

Spokesman Doug Hock said EnCana has no other interest in the Marcellus Shale, a ribbon of gas-laden rock about a mile underground that stretches from upstate New York into Virginia but centers on Pennsylvania.

Nov. 13--Royal Dutch Shell sees a bigger role for North and South America as it seeks to boost global output of oil and natural gas in coming years, said Marvin Odum, president of the company's U.S. division.

Going forward, the region should be a "disproportionately growing part of Shell" as new projects come online in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil, the Canadian oil sands and natural gas fields in the U.S. and Canada, Odum said in an interview with the Chronicle this week.

"There is a real focus on this part of the world inside of Shell," Odum said, adding that while North and South America account for about a quarter of the company's production today, investment will be "much higher than that" in the future.
