IBM Takes Aim at Hewlett-Packard

“The Wall Street Journal beginning to offer more details of an acquisition of Sun by IBM. Now saying that the deal could be valued at between $10 and $11 per share. That would be the $6.5 billion IBM would be offering in addition to the $1.4 billion in cash that sun has on its balance sheet. More importantly, this deal is expected to be announced this again, according to the Journal, that it would represent a 125% premium over Sun’s trading price earlier on Monday. This would be a sizable deal. Some are speculating that IBM’s action with Sun is in direct response to Cisco’s entry into the server business announced earlier this week, but everybody I am talking to says that Cisco is not the real target here. This is all about Hewlett-Packard. Cisco going after HP, IBM now going after HP. HP has a lot of new headaches on its hands as far as competition… I say 125% premium, I[More...]

HP expects to report net income of $1.03 per share on revenue of $33.6 billion, with $.19 of earnings coming from the acquisition of Electronic Data Systems. These results beat Thomson-Reuters First Call estimates of $1.00 per share on revenue of $33.09 billion. As the global economy entered what appears to be a worldwide recession, HP grew sales by 19% year-over-year.
NCR Corporation (NCR) is a large, well-established global technology firm with a diversified product base. Following a period of earnings growth through cost-cutting initiatives, the company has begun to show signs of more meaningful revenue growth. Continued momentum in the ATM business has driven growth and led NCR Corporation to post gains in its Financial Self-Service segment, its largest division. Although its fastest growing business, Terradata, is no longer a part of the company, we are encouraged with growth in Financial Self-Services, and believe that NCR can produce sustainable growth as earnings are driven by an improving top-line. After several years of disappointment, Financial Self-Services has grown sales initially in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, with domestic sales posting growth in 2007. The company has also been making a steady progress in[More...]

Cache, Inc. (CACH) continues to perform well in the difficult macro environment that has created headwinds that are negatively affecting the consumer. These headwinds include falling house prices, record levels of debt, and rising food and energy prices, which will continue to offset the strength in the company's core Cache store concept, its direct sourcing efforts, and its solid balance sheet. We reiterate our Hold rating. The company's choice to close its poorly performing Lillie Rubin stores was a smart strategic decision that should lead to better results in future quarters. The acquisition of its largest supplier Adrienne Victoria Designs will help the company improve its direct sourcing efforts and expand its merchandising efforts. CACH shares are up about 55% year-to-date, and that reflects much of the positives associated with its business.
Top and Bottom 10 Stocks by ATR Percentage: Volatility

Every four seconds, an identity is stolen in the U.S. Victims can spend years recovering from theft and attempting to clean up the mess it leaves behind, including lost job opportunities, refusal of loans for houses and cars and even jail time as a result of false data in law enforcement records. The recent news that the Justice Department will prosecute 11 hackers who gained access to more than 41 million credit and debit cards is proof positive that precautions need to be taken by consumers to protect their identity. At the same time, consumers and businesses alike want to utilize the convenience of electronic payments, online commerce and other technology-based exchanges.[More...]
