Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad. Most people and investment managers trade too often. Edison Intenational Results Down

Edison International (EIX) reported its 1st quarter 2009 earnings. Consolidated net income for the reported quarter totaled $250 million, or $0.76 per basic and diluted share, down 16.5%, compared with $299 million or $0.91 per basic and diluted share in the year-ago quarter. Excluding non-core items, Core earnings totaled $258 million, or $0.79 per share, representing a 15.1% decrease compared to $304 million, or $0.92 per share, in the 1st quarter of 2008. Core earnings decreased due to Edison Mission Group registering lower power prices and generation levels at Midwest Generation and Homer City apart from reduced trading income. More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. Nine Notable Dividend Increases

Several large companies announced dividend increases over the past week. One of the most notable bullish calls came from the telecom sectors as AT&T (T) showed confidence in its business model by increasing its dividend payment to shareholders for the twenty fifth consecutive years. Despite the tough macroeconomic conditions AT&T (T) is still committed to raising its quarterly dividend. The board announced a 2.5% increase of the quarterly payment to to $0.41/share. Edison Int'l Upgraded To Buy - Analyst Blog

In the third quarter of 2008, Edison International (EIX) generated total operating revenue of $4.11 billion, up 4.3% compared to total revenue of $3.94 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2007. Core earnings totaled $482 million, or $1.46 per share, representing a nearly 3.7% increase compared to $465 million, or $1.41 per share, in the third quarter of 2007. Core earnings increased mainly due to higher operating income at Southern California Edison. The company reaffirmed its 2008 earnings guidance range of $3.61 to $4.01 per share. However, Edison International now expects fiscal 2008 results to be at the middle of the range rather than at the upper-end as previously announced. Edison International (EIX) reaffirmed 2008 GAAP and core earnings guidance within the range of $3.61 to $4.01 per share. Within this range, Southern California Edison (SCE) and Edison Mission Group (EMG) are expected to be between $2.18 to $2.28 and $1.57 to $1.87 per share, respectively, while the parent company EIX and Other segment is expected to register a loss of $0.14 per share in 2008. Several issues that previously reduced visibility of the company's long-term prospects have been resolved. In the second quarter, Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (AAP) reported diluted earnings per share were $0.79, compared to $0.64 in the prior-year period. Net sales increased to $1.24 billion from $1.17 billion in the same period last year. The revenue increase reflected a net addition of 138 new stores in the past 12 months. Comparable store sales saw an increase of 2.9% compared to 1.2% increase in the same quarter of the previous year. Though it is generating topline growth by opening new stores, the company currently faces a challenging industry environment. To combat the difficult industry metrics, AAP has reviewed its business strategies to drive sales, lower costs and increase return on invested capital (ROIC). Some Local Residents Uneasy About Nuke-Plant Project

Oct. 6--SAN ONOFRE -- Some North County residents say upgrades under way at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station should stop until the public is better educated about nuclear disaster preparedness and until the results of a recent emergency-response drill at the plant are released.
Erin Morin, an avocado farmer from east Oceanside's rural Sleeping Indian neighborhood, said Monday that she and many others believe public safety meetings should have been held in North County before work recently started to replace San Onofre's steam generators.
The nuclear power plant is roughly 18 miles north of Oceanside.
