EMC Insurance Group Inc. (Nasdaq:EMCI) today reported operating income of $3,152,000 ($0.24 per share) for the third quarter ended September 30, 2009, compared to an operating loss of $295,000 ($0.02 per share) for the third quarter of 20081.
Net income, including realized investment gains and losses, totaled $5,051,000 ($0.38 per share) for the third quarter of 2009 compared to a net loss of $9,458,000 ($0.70 per share) for the third quarter of 2008.
For the nine-month period ended September 30, 2009, net income was $17,822,000 ($1.35 per share) compared to a net loss of $2,179,000 ($0.16 per share) for the same period in 2008.

EMC Insurance Group Inc. (Nasdaq:EMCI) today reported operating income of $6,379,000 ($0.48 per share) for the second quarter ended June 30, 2009, compared to an operating loss of $1,181,000 ($0.09 per share) for the second quarter of 20081.
For the six-month period ended June 30, 2009, operating income was $17,768,000 ($1.34 per share) compared to $8,930,000 ($0.65 per share) for the same period in 2008.
Net income, including realized investment gains and losses, totaled $6,967,000 ($0.53 per share) for the second quarter of 2009 compared to a net loss of $940,000 ($0.07 per share) for the second quarter of 2008.

Best Co. has affirmed the financial strength rating (FSR) of A- (Excellent) and issuer credit ratings (ICR) of “a-” of EMC Insurance Companies (EMC), its property/casualty pool members and its separately rated member, EMC Reinsurance Company (EMC Re). EMC Insurance Group Inc. (Nasdaq:EMCI) today reported operating income of $11,389,000 ($0.86 per share) for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009, compared to $10,112,000 ($0.73 per share) for the first quarter of 20081. Net income, including realized investment losses, totaled $5,804,000 ($0.44 per share) for the first quarter of 2009 compared to $8,219,000 ($0.60 per share) for the first quarter of 2008. Net income for the first quarter of 2009 includes $8,357,000 ($0.41 per share after tax) of “other-than-temporary” investment impairment losses recorded on 24 equity securities and one fixed maturity security. The impairment losses on the equity securities, which totaled $6,137,000, are a result of the severe and prolonged turmoil in the financial markets. The impairment loss on the fixed maturity security, which totaled $2,220,000, is attributed to a bankruptcy filing made by Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, now known as Chemtura Corporation. The Company previously disclosed this bankruptcy filing in a Form 8-K Current Report on March 23, 2009. For comparison purposes, “other-than-temporary” investment impairment losses totaled $2,902,000 ($0.14 per share after tax) on 13 equity securities in the first quarter of 2008.[More...]
