If over the past six months or so it has seemed as if you were partying like it was 1999 it might be time to reevaluate your stance. One thing that we have been taking a closer look at lately is the pricing of risk. Obviously when investors think that risks are low they will demonstrate risk seeking behavior. We have seen this as the SP500 has climbed 56.6% from the March lows to the highs on 8/28/09. With a rise like that you would think that 2008 never happened, of course if you believe that then you also believe in a land of make believe with money trees, the fountain of youth, and models for all.[More...]

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team

Despite the continuing negative sentiment toward China from much of Wall Street, China’s remarkable economic growth continues unabated.

While Wall Street “experts” focus solely on the export-oriented eastern cities in China, they are missing the rapid growth occurring in other parts of China with the government’s “Go West” program.

And let’s not forget that within a few years, the size of China’s middle class will exceed the entire population of the United States.

However, there are still many investors who are not comfortable investing directly in China and buying Chinese[More...]

Spotlight On: Biotech The U.S. biotechnology industry includes about 1,000 companies, of all sizes, with combined annual revenues close to $50 billion. Large companies include Amgen, Biogen Idec, Genetech, Genzyme, Life Technologies and Monsanto. Because so many drugs are now developed using biotechnology, the biotech and pharmaceutical industries overlap. Demand for biotechnology products and services is driven primarily by the willingness of insurers to pay for new medical treatments. With the pending introduction of Obamacare, new uncertainties are introduced to this industry. Biotech products and treatments tend to be expensive and the drive to reduce costs through rationing will no doubt effect this industry. The profitability of individual companies depends on the discovery and effective marketing of new products.
India to Be the Fastest-Growing Economy in 2010 The World Bank has projected (in its Global Development Finance Report) that the Indian economy will grow at 8% in 2010, which would make it the fastest-growing economy in the world for the first time, surpassing China, which is projected to grow at 7.7% rate. Please read Dirk Van Dijk's blog? for the World Bank's forecast on the global economy. For the current year, the Indian economy is projected to grow at 5.1%, revised up from an earlier projection of 4%. It may be added that India has consistently outperformed World Bank's forecasts in the past. The slow pace of reforms in critical areas had affected India's growth in the past years. However, the re-elected Government has promised to bring[More...]

The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. I expect good things but the stock action has been weak"ish" and this is the more expensive of the two - not that[More...]

Daily Report For Wednesday, Apr 1, 2009

(8:07am ET) In his absence, Bill has asked the CTAB traders fill in for him today and maybe tomorrow as well. Bill was having connectivity and other related computer issues early Tuesday morning. Perhaps the Conficker worm virus programmed to be unleashed April 1, began slithering through the Bahamas a little ahead of schedule. The final trading day of the month opened higher, with aggressive traders nimbly positioning themselves for further short gains, after a late afternoon bounce Monday, anticipating large money managers to “mark up” equities boosting their quarter end returns. This strategy paid off nicely as the S&P future rose to 807, nearly 4% off Monday’s late afternoon low of 776. However, traders expecting prices to close near the highs were disappointed, as stocks peaked near 3pm eastern, giving up a significant portion of the day’s gains. The DJIA finished up 86.9 (+1.15%) closing at 7608.92,[More...]
