Let me preface this piece by saying I stole this specific instrument from Jeffrey Saut, who mentioned it in his weekly missive. Long time readers will know I've mentioned this market has become all about asset allocation, and sectors - I noticed this late in 2007 when we were hiding out in commodities while many other sectors were imploding but other than a few periods when "everything" is going down (or up) it appears a lot of individual stock selection is going out the window and "sectors" are more important. Some themes are broad like "China" or "commodities" (which in many ways are now the same theme), where others are narrower such as "casual dining restaurants". I don't know if its the dominance of program trading or the growing popularity of ETFs but this seems to be a secular change in the[More...]

Enterprise Products Partners, L.P. (EPD) reported strong third-quarter results, raised quarterly distribution, and declared that it had sufficient internal resources to meet its next year's growth capital needs. Total gross operating margin increased 32% year-over-year, primarily driven by the diversified NGL and natural gas pipeline and storage businesses. Importantly, the master limited partnership (MLP) announced a 6.6% year-over-year increase in quarterly distribution to the annualized run rate of $2.09 per unit. Quarterly distributable cash flows provided very comfortable 1.2x coverage to cash distributions to limited partners. Our continued favorable view of EPD units reflects the partnership's diversified asset base, strong distribution growth prospects, and attractive valuation. Enterprise common units are trading at a premium[More...]

Oct. 2--After a week of contaminating the Ocmulgee River, three major sewage spills ended in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to the Macon Water Authority.

That action became necessary last week after heavy rains and a corroded sewer pipe caused a sinkhole at the foot of Macon's levee, jeopardizing the earthen berm around part of the city.

Authority and local public works employees worked frantically to sandbag the sinkhole, and a contractor started the next day setting up above-ground bypass pipes so sewage could flow without traveling through the broken pipe.
