Apollo Group: Industry Bellwether Continues Exceptional Growth

The for-profit education business has enjoyed a nice run as unemployment rates continue to rise ever higher. The largest of the sector is Apollo Group (APOL), owner of The University of Phoenix. Apollo reported earnings after the close on Monday which handily beat what the street had expected. Third quarter profit rose to $201.1 million, or $1.26 per share, from $139.1 million or 85 cents per share. Revenue topped a billion ($1.05B) from $835.2 million last year, up 26%. Clearly, the current operating environment has propelled the online educator to substantial enrollment growth. The earnings beat was not unexpected as analysts have been raising estimates for this quarter over the past few months. 54 Stocks Returning 15%+ in January

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I had mentioned earlier that we were seeing relative strength in education stocks such as the Apollo Group (APOL) and ITT Education Services (ESI), both of which made fresh 52-week highs last week. The Market Slides On Mixed Earnings and Volume

Apple’s earnings news couldn’t outweigh the negative earnings from Microsoft. Earnings season is always full of surprises; some good some bad. AAPL was able to blow away earnings on iPod sale, but MSFT disappointed and announced 5,000 in job cuts. The market did not take kindly to the poor MSFT news and subsequently triggered a sell off. Volume rose on the NASDAQ while the NYSE saw volume ease. There is still a contingent to buy the dips, buy cheap stocks, those who buy into this theory continue to be left in the dark. Though we’ve been in a bear market for over a year now, there are a few pockets of relative strength. Lower Paxton, Pa., Seeks Grant to Build Solar Farm Over Closed Landfill

Sep. 4--Lower Paxton Twp. supervisors will seek a state grant to build a $14 million solar farm atop its closed landfill to generate electricity.
The board voted unanimously on Tuesday night, with Supervisor William L. Hornung absent, to hire Energy Systems & Installations Inc. of Hershey for $12,000 to apply for the funding for the project.
In its preliminary analysis of the project, ESI officials said that creating a system capable of providing 3 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year would cost about $14 million.
