After the big drop on Monday, the market has been very volatile. The overall sentiment has been negative. Today, the market started out strong and was able to keep most of the gains. Financials and health care stocks were among the stronger sectors. For the health care sector, MRK added +3.55%; WLP jumped +5.38%; and, ESRX added +3.91%. Financials finally pulled up a little after falling for 3 straight days: HIG +6.96%, GS +2.4%, BAC +4.88%, PNC +4.05%. The market is slightly weaker in early trading, but financials have bounced from their lows are are now higher, bucking the broad-based weakness. The energy sector is the biggest laggard, after the IEA reduced its global oil demand forecast by 1 million barrels per day. That is causing oil prices to dip below $50, and oil and gas stocks are lower as well. The Wall St. Journal is reporting that talks between Microsoft and Yahoo are back on. Win For The Bulls

The indices were up, down, up, and down again to close slightly higher on the session, a win for the bulls and not the reversal type day after yesterday?s rally. So that?s a positive. The day started out with a strong move off the initial soft opening, and then the indices went to new rally highs, reaching 1135 on the NDX and 732 or so on the SPX. At that point they went into an orderly decline that lasted several hours that was constructive. Secondary support held, and they rallied in the afternoon, with the NDX retesting the earlier highs, but when the SPX failed to confirm that they rolled over in the last 15 minutes and gave back about 40-50% of the rally. Net on the day the Dow was up only 3 points to just under 6930, the S&P 500 up 1.72 at 721.32, and the Nasdaq 100 up 13.51[More...]
