Three Energy Stocks Our Top Managers May Have Overlooked

The last year and a half has been a tumultuous one not just for the financial sector but for the energy sector, as well. Just over a year ago, crude oil prices were topping out above $140 a barrel before starting a downward spiral that left prices bottoming out around $35 per barrel earlier this year.[More...]

Tickers For The Latest Portfolio Reshaping

Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad.

Most people and investment managers trade too often. They sell their winners too rapidly, and panic too soon on their losers. Now, I’m not advocating “buy and forget,” or Buffett’s statement, “Our favorite holding period is forever.”[More...]

Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) – An Island Of Stability For Dividend Investors

Master Limited Partnerships are limited by US Code to only apply to enterprises that engage in certain businesses, mostly pertaining to the use of natural resources, such as petroleum and natural gas extraction and transportation. They combine the tax advantages of a partnership and higher dividend yields with the day to day tradability of common stocks.MLPs consist of a general partner who manages the operations and limited partners who own the rest of the units for the partnership. Unlike corporations MLPs are not subject to double taxation.Their stocks are called units, while their dividends are called distributions. The units are very easy to buy and sell, as they trade just like any[More...]

Daily Report For Friday, Mar 13, 2009

(9:48am ET) Equity market prices lifted pretty much from start to finish of Thursday’s session. Retail Sales, Jobless Claims and Business Inventories and comments from Barney Frank and Tim Geithner played a role in the general bullishness. The latter made comments on the dangers of ending the mark-to-market rule and instead believe subtle changes could be made in an effort to improve it. Pfizer (PFE) made a big splash with the announcement its Phase III trial of Sutent was stopped early as the drug showed a significant benefit in patients with pancreatic cancer. At the close, the DJIA (+239.66 +3.46% to 7170.06), S&P 500 (+29.38% to 750.74) and NASDAQ (+54.46 +3.97% to 1426.10) were up sharply for the second day in the past three. The Toronto Composite (+271.25 +3.39% to 8282.27) and Venture Board (+19.52 +2.37% to 843.42) were almost as strong. The winning sector by a wide margin was[More...]

ETF Deathwatch

That is the title of an article from someone named Ron Rowland. The article has a spreadsheet of 139 ETFs and ETNs that might be in trouble due to very low dollar volume. Exchange traded products are obviously becoming more and more a part of the portfolio landscape, providers have created over 700 funds so far and I'm not even sure if a third of them are profitable. It would be reasonable to wonder whether anything from X-shares will be around a year from now but I doubt anything, no matter how obscure, from iShares/iPath is going anywhere. According to the Deathwatch the Barclays Global product with the lowest dollar volume is the iPath Aluminum ETN (JJU) with only $6118 worth of shares traded per day. Anyone thinking they have some particular insight with aluminum can probably buy JJU with confidence about it lasting. That same type of insight about the biofuels ETN[More...]
