Cap and Trade Part Two: How We'll Profit

We got hundreds of responses to last week's cap and trade essay. Plenty of readers were shocked by how much the new bill will cost you, me, and every American family... Not J.M., who writes, "Ask me if I am surprised. Congress (as well as local governments) treats us as cash cows, which in fact we are." Some readers didn't like questioning our government's huge new tax policy. R.R. writes, "Matt's article on the energy legislation is a political rant and fear mongering." And D.B. gripes, "I wish I could cancel and get my money back when I read your Republican and Libertarian views. Why don't you just stick to providing investment advice and leave the environmental commentary to scientists?" Well, D.B., I'd be sad to see you go. But thanks for cutting to the chase: how to profit. It's time to talk about the best ways to recoup some[More...]

Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever.
Assuming that GDP growth is slightly negative for the next 3 to 4 quarters while the credit markets gradually strengthen, let's consider the outlook and opportunities for the Alternative Energy industry over the next 6 to 12 months. Many companies engaged in the solar power market offer profitability with strong average long-term annual earnings growth expectations of approximately 40%, stock price valuations significantly discounted from their recent historic highs, and a favorable political environment. Industry Outlook for Alternative Energy Stocks: Speculative - Bullish The electric power industry is one of the world's largest industrial segments. With a global market share of approximately 25%, the United States is the leading producer of electricity, followed by China, Japan and Russia. Total global electricity consumption volume grew at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.1% from 1980 to 2006, the most[More...]

Volatility Continues, Where Are We Headed?

Big news, markets were up 4% today. Big market swings continued today and look they are here to stay for a while. During today's session the market made three swings of 3% or more. I would still be very cautious in this market. I prefer daytrading this market and refuse to hold positions overnight, too dangerous. The trendline has been very strong resistance and it looks like will butt heads with it again. I hope we get there by Friday as Friday's payroll data could provide the catalyst to breakthrough this trendline. I still like CVX, ETR, and XOM as I think they are poised for big moves ahead.[More...]

Fourth Worst Drop Ever

Friday we hit overbought conditions on decreasing volume, which led me to believe that we would see some short-term consolidation, however, I did not expect a 679 point loss on the Dow. The theme still seems to be global liquidation and the explosive rally over the last week or so only fueled the fire. Looking at the daily chart of the SPDR's and it is easy to see the downtrend is still very much intact. The shorter timeframe does not provide much solace for the bulls either. Looks like we might fill the gap on the chart below. If those levels don't hold I think the markets are in for another leg lower. <a[More...]

We continue to see EOG Resources, Inc. (EOG) shares as a core holding in the large-cap exploration and production (E&P) space for the company?s demonstrated ability to achieve consistent production growth, primarily through organic means. EOG?s strong positions in Texas Barnett Shale and North Dakota?s Bakken plays provide it with a multi-year inventory of development drilling opportunities. EOG has a very strong organic production-growth profile, with volumes expected to increase by approximately 15% in 2008. We are keeping our recommendation, price objective and estimates unchanged at this stage. Long-term production-growth visibility has significantly improved following recent discoveries, and the management is guiding towards annual growth of approximately 14% in the 2009-2010 period.
