More Funds Paying Over 8%

In an on-going search for funds with high yields, I find a fruitful crop of them at Eaton Vance's closed-end (CEF) group. For the time being I am ignoring their municipal bond CEF group and looking at the "alternative" investment funds. In general the funds achieve high yields in one of two ways. The first uses leverage, wherein they borrow or issue preferred shares at a lower rate than they can earn. This works well for fixed income vehicles from straight bonds to bank loans and for high dividend-paying stocks. [More...]

With (accurate) earnings proving to be a difficult metric to rank stocks I took a look at stocks which paid a dividend yield of at least 5%, had no long term debt but had a market cap over $100m. The list was short, coming in at 32 stocks. Top of the list was Eaton Vance Risk Managed Diversified (ETJ); it had a quoted yield of 10.2% and has a market cap of $1.2bn. Last week we saw further market volatility as major indexes continued extending their losses for October, which could turn out to be the worst month for the markets since 1938. There was an announcement from S&P which decreased the expected dividend growth for 2008 to 1.20% and also provided a cautionary outlook for dividends and earnings in 2009. Despite all the doom and gloom there were several notable dividend increases over the past week. Microchip Technology (MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced an increase in the dividend to 33.9 cents per share. Microchip initiated quarterly cash dividend payments in the third quarter of fiscal year 2003 and has increased the cash dividend by 9.4% from the dividend level one year ago.
