With businesses in nearly every industry looking for ways to lower non-critical expenses, we expect the business consulting industry to face a challenging operating environment in the near term. OUTLOOK We have a negative outlook for the business consulting services industry, based upon the difficult economic environment facing the companies' existing and potential customers. Business consulting companies provide a wide range of services to their clients. Typical services include litigation support, business strategy planning, market and demand forecasting, policy analysis and consulting in the areas such as corporate finance, human resources, technology and restructuring.
Highlighted in this post are the following companies: Corporate Executive Board (EXBD), CRA International (CRAI), First Advantage Corporation (FADV) and Navigant Consulting (NCI). Shares of Sell-rated Corporate Executive Board (EXBD) are trading down 20% after releasing 4th-quarter results that fell short of Street expectations, and issuing a disappointing 2009 forecast. These results could be an ominous sign for other firms in the business consulting[More...]

The Corporate Executive Board - Bear Of The Day

We maintain our Sell rating on shares of The Corporate Executive Board following the release of third-quarter results. We believe the shares of The Corporate Executive Board are overvalued near current levels, in light of the weak conditions in the current operating environment. Although Q3 results came in ahead of expectations, we have reduced our fourth-quarter 2008 and full-year 2009 EPS estimates as the company's outlook remains modest, in part due to the fact that EXBD has yet to improve its cross-sell ratio. Rather, the cross-sell ratio continues to deteriorate, and management has lowered its forward guidance as a result. We have identified several concerns within the company's current operating statistics, which we have detailed above. Given the current operating pressures, along with ongoing concerns regarding a slowing economy, we believe the shares should trade at a discount to the peer group average.
EXBD a Sell Prior to Earnings - Analyst Blog

The Corporate Executive Board Company (EXBD) provides research and analysis to more than 4,700 corporations for a fixed annual membership fee. The company targets top-level executives across a multitude of industries, and then identifies the common issues facing those individuals in a given year. We maintain our Sell rating on shares of EXBD prior to the release of third-quarter results. We slightly reduced our full-year estimate following the release of Q2 results, as the company's outlook remains modest, in part due to the fact that EXBD has yet to improve its cross-sell ratio. Given the current operating pressures, along with ongoing concerns regarding a slowing economy, we believe the shares should trade at a discount to the peer group average.
Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. (HMY) is benefiting from higher gold prices. Going forward, Harmony is focused on reducing its overall operating costs through its continuous operations agreement and the shutdown of loss-making shafts. The company is also reducing its headcount to control costs. As a result, we rate the shares a Hold with a target of $11.50. The company will sell Orkney shafts 2, 4, 7 and 60% interest in its Randfontein operations to Pamodzi Investment Holdings and U.S.-based equity firms First Reserve Corporation and AMCI Capital. In order to optimize value from its low-priority assets, the company also entered into a sale agreement with African Precious Minerals. The company has a diverse portfolio of gold development projects spread across South Africa and PNG. Harmony expects that all its projects taken together will add over 1.5 million oz per year to its[More...]
