Bret Barakett's Tremblant Capital Group Bets On Technology: 13F Filing Q1 2009

This is the 1st Quarter 2009 edition of our ongoing hedge fund portfolio tracking series. Before reading this update, make sure you check out the Hedge Fund 13F filings series preface. Next up, we have Tremblant Capital Group. Tremblant is a $3 billion hedge fund based in New York and is run by Bret Barakett, who is a former portfolio manager at Moore Capital Management (the hedge fund run by the great Louis Bacon, whom we also track). If the last name of 'Barakett' sounds familiar, its because his brother, Timothy Barakett, manages fellow hedge fund Atticus Capital, whose portfolio we recently covered. Taken from their site, Tremblant Capital Group's objective is "to achieve superior risk adjust returns[More...]

54 Stocks Returning 15%+ in January

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I'm not calling for a 90% drop[More...]

EYE Shares Seen as a Hold - Analyst Blog

Advanced Medical Optics (EYE) announced reduced management guidance for 2008 due primarily to weaker-than-expected refractive procedures and system sales in the U.S. and Europe from declining economic conditions and weaker-than-expected eye care sales. We have lowered our FY08/FY09 estimates. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter results on October 31. At its current price of $7.50 per share, AMO is trading at 8x our 2009 earnings estimate of $0.94 per share and roughly a 0.4x P/E/G on 2009 EPS estimate, at a discount to the peer group. Growth in 2008 is expected to be negatively impacted by an elective refractive procedure market that is weakening in the U.S and Europe due to declining economic conditions, by global system sales and by reduced expected growth in refractive intraocular lens sales. Despite declining U.S.[More...]

Levi & Korsinsky, LLP announces that it has filed a class action lawsuit alleging breaches of fiduciary duty and other violations of state law by the board of directors of Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. arising out of their attempt to sell the Company to Abbott Laboratories . Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of Advanced Medical will receive $22.00 cash for every share they hold of Advanced Medical, or $1.36 billion. The transaction appears to be unfair and undervalues the Company's shares given that Advanced Medical's shares traded as high as $23.31 per share as recently as September 2, 2008. Moreover, the present purported premium offer represents only a 2.5 multiplier from last year's sales, which is in line with multipliers on similar deals and therefore does not appear to represent any significant premium payable to Advanced Medical shareholders.[More...]
