Market Vectors Coal (KOL) Red Hot

Coal was one of our best performing sector groups in latter 2007 through summer 2008. While much of the focus of late has been on natural gas, the coal stocks have been ripping in even larger magnitude. I was a bull on coal over natural gas (although the market in its student body left trading simply moves all commodities together) because of the portability of coal over natural gas. We were early on this theme as the market was so focused on oil stocks at the time, and made a lot of money (Dec 6, 2007: Coal Stocks Quietly in Bull Market) I wrote a bevy of pieces about this 1.5 years ago... but again, the market is not very granular nowadays; it likes big sweeping themes that are simple: i.e. commodities good. I have a litany of posts on just about[More...]

Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK): Upgraded To Overweight At Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley is upgrading Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) to Overweight from Equal-weight with a $34 tgt. CHK is levered to the 2010 recovery in natural gas prices; Morgan Stanley expects the shares to remain “gas beta” near term. Beyond their view of improving natural gas fundamentals, they see merit to CHK’s operating plan and expect the strategy to support outperformance. CHK is focusing on the lowest-cost US resource plays and has secured capital from partners to accelerate development. Firm sees improving capital efficiency and accelerating production and reserve growth in 2010/11 as a result. The market is concerned about follow through, and therein lies the opportunity. They see attractive relative valuation at a ~25% discount on 2010e unhedged EV/EBITDA and a ~18% discount to NAV at strip pricing. <span[More...]

Long Picks For Monday

The major index charts remain in solid rising trends for now. On a fundamental level, I continue to think this rally has been built on TARP money, short covering, and unrealistic hopes on the economy. Although corporate earnings have exceeded estimates, in the end earnings remain poor. Overbought sectors such as retail, restaurants, real estate, and financials need to contend with a still-deteriorating economic picture. That being the case, I am choosing to remain patient with a majority of short positions while actively trading the long side as long as the rally continues. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;"[More...]

Q: “Please comment on Suntech Power Holdings. Comparing STP with KHD Humboldt Wedag, which is the better investment at this time?” Suntech Power Holdings (STP: NYSE) has taken us on a wild ride since we added it in January 2007. Its stock price more than doubled toward the end of 2007. Then the stock dropped steeply with the market meltdown in early 2008. The stock is up about 15% overall in the past 16 months or so.Long term, I think that Suntech is a good investment with great potential. The world is building out its solar infrastructures, especially in Asia, where Suntech focuses its solar business. It’s no secret that fossil fuels are scarce and expensive. This has been good for the likes of CONSOL Energy (CNX: NYSE) and Foundation Coal Holdings (FCL: NYSE). But the environmental issues for coal and other hydrocarbons are profound. People are getting worried about carbon dio[More...]
