Trading The Next Leg Down

Now that we have broken down out of the consolidation zone in each of the major indexes, it is highly likely that we have a significant downward move ahead. Given recent volatility, we could see a headfake rally virtually anywhere. However, we have broken through lows that were tested on multiple occasions, and are in a clear downtrend, both long- and near-term. We have lower to go in the immediate future. In this volatile market, I am having more success trading options than equities. This is a personal style thing, and relates to my relatively tight stops on equity trades. I tend to accumulate a much larger number of small options positions gradually over time. Because they are small, I do not get anxious when they go they wander in the wrong direction, whereas I get very anxious when my equity trades do not work immediately. Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.[More...]

I usually post a "best of" list each week in terms of best returns. I thought it would be instructive to show the top 35 stocks (over $2 billion market cap) of the past week. The numbers are staggering... not just in the % return but I am including the market capitalization in the far left column. For those who are newer to the market, market capitalization is simply the # of shares X the stock price and it signifies "size". The scale below is billions so 13.2 = 13.2 Billion. When you cross reference the percentage moves against the market caps you can see you many "billions" have been created on paper in the last 5-6 days. Again, we've seen this action before, and you just have to shake your head when stodgy financials trade like small cap Chinese stocks or dot coms from the late 90s, falling 60%... popping 50%. $100 Billion market cap companies at that.
